Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Coordinator
The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Coordinator supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of HSE programmes across the organisation. The role is responsible for coordinating health and safety activities, maintaining compliance records, supporting incident management processes, monitoring performance metrics, and assisting managers and employees in meeting legal and company safety requirements.
Working closely with operational teams and management, the Health & Safety Coordinator helps foster a positive safety culture by promoting safe working practices, supporting risk management activities, and ensuring the effective administration of health and safety systems.
Responsibilities
Health & Safety Compliance
- Support the implementation and maintenance of the organisation's health and safety management system.
- Assist in ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety legislation, regulations, standards, and company policies.
- Maintain records of risk assessments, safe systems of work, inspections, audits, and training activities.
- Monitor legislative updates and assist with the implementation of any changes.
Incident Management
- Analyse accidents, incidents, near misses, and safety observations.
- Identify opportunities for improvement.
- Monitor corrective and preventive actions to ensure completion within agreed timescales.
- Prepare trend analysis for management review.
Audits, Inspections and Monitoring
- Coordinate workplace inspections and internal health and safety audits.
- Track findings and follow up on corrective actions.
- Support the assurance team with external/internal audits and regulatory inspections when required.
- Maintain records of compliance monitoring activities.
- Support Business Assurance reporting by updating MyCompliance, trackers, dashboards, meeting papers and action logs.

Training and Communication
- Coordinate health and safety training programmes and maintain training records.
- Work closely with HR to identify training needs, support the planning of HSE-related training initiatives, and ensure training requirements are aligned with organisational priorities, employee development plans and compliance obligations.
- Partner with HR to coordinate training schedules, attendance, communications and follow-up actions, ensuring accurate records are maintained and refresher training is completed within required timescales.
- Support HR-led learning and development initiatives by providing HSE input, guidance and content where required, helping to embed safe working practices into wider employee training and engagement activities.
- Support employee inductions and onboarding activities relating to health and safety.
- Develop and distribute safety communications, alerts and awareness campaigns.
- Promote employee engagement in health and safety initiatives.
Reporting and Administration
- Produce regular health and safety performance reports and KPI dashboards.
- Maintain accurate health and safety documentation and records.
- Coordinate meetings, committees, and safety forums, including preparation of minutes and action logs.
- Support data collection and reporting for management and regulatory requirements.
- Constructionline, Achilles and other client, supplier and PQQ platforms.
- Maintain a forward planner for accreditation and PQQ expiry dates, submissions, audits, fees, certificates and platform actions.

Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to health and safety improvement projects and initiatives.
- Support the promotion of a proactive safety culture throughout the organisation.
- Support to deliver and embed the VVB Strategy.
- Promote VVB’s vision and values to internal and external stakeholders including our vision of Safe, Sustainability and Wellbeing
- Work with the SSW team to deliver continuous improvement within the function,
- Ensure that all H&S reporting requirements are accurately provided to the Head of Operational Health & Safety
Requirements
- Excellent IT skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Adobe, PowerPoint)
- Strong administrative and organisational skills
- Full UK driver’s license
- Excellent problem-solving skills, delivering pragmatic solutions
- Able to make a real impact in change with clear and precise plans
- Ability to interpret and convey health and safety legislation accurately to people but in a practical manner
- Innovative approach with a solution driven mindset
- Ability to audit systems, processes, procedures and documentation and evaluate effectiveness
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels
- Ability to manage workload effectively
- Ability to work flexibly and travel to site locations across the UK
