Health, Safety & Wellbeing Lead
We are looking for an experienced Health, Safety & Wellbeing Lead to strengthen and embed a proactive safety and wellbeing culture across our global Water & Maritime business. In this role, you will work closely with leaders and project teams to drive continuous improvement and deliver safer, more sustainable outcomes worldwide.
What you will do as Health & Safety Lead?
The Business Line HS&W Lead is responsible for embedding a proactive, people-centred Health, Safety and Wellbeing culture across the business line and ensuring Health, Safety & Wellbeing plans, processes, tools and communications are effectively integrated into project delivery, leadership behaviours, culture and compliance activities.
You will thrive in this role if you enjoy working alongside project teams, technical specialists and leaders to improve how work is delivered. You bring a practical, coaching-oriented approach and are motivated by helping teams translate requirements into better ways of working.
You are comfortable influencing without direct authority, working across functions, countries and disciplines, and building strong relationships that improve performance, accountability and continuous improvement.
Rather than acting as a compliance enforcer, you see Health, Safety & Wellbeing as an integral part of leadership, project delivery and organisational culture.
Operational HS&W Management
- Oversee implementation of HS&W policies, procedures, and risk management frameworks within projects and offices.
- Support project teams in hazard identification, risk assessments, and development of safe work methods.
- Provide subject-matter support for complex field, environmental, and construction supervision activities.
- Ensure lessons learned and best practices are captured, shared, and embedded.
- Drive consistent application of HS&W standards across regions, ensuring alignment to a common delivery approach.
- Promote safe design principles and support project teams in identifying, eliminating and reducing risks at the earliest stages of project development and design.
Assurance, Compliance & Governance
- Support implementation and monitoring of internal health & safety standards, legal and regulatory requirements across multiple geographies.
- Lead or support incident investigations, ensuring root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Track and report health & safety performance metrics, trends, and risk indicators.
- Prepare governance updates for business line leadership and global HS&W committees.
- Ensure health & safety performance is visible and linked to overall project performance, supporting continuous improvement across margin, quality and delivery outcomes
Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration
- Act as the primary HS&W partner for the business line, supporting leaders, project managers, and field staff.
- Coordinate with global and regional HS&W teams to ensure consistency and knowledge sharing.
- Coordinate Business Line Health, Safety & Wellbeing communications, learning and improvement initiatives.
- Act as a key partner to the Technical Director in embedding HS&W into the broader technical delivery agenda.

Wellbeing & Psychological Safety
- Promote wellbeing initiatives relevant to high-pressure project delivery environments.
- Integrate physical and mental health considerations into HS&W planning and risk assessments.
Capability Building
- Facilitate and support HS&W training and coaching for leaders, project managers, and site teams.
- Enhance competence in safety leadership, hazard awareness, incident reporting, and wellbeing.
- Support onboarding processes to ensure new employees understand HS&W expectations.
- Build capability to ensure HS&W is proactively integrated into project delivery, not treated as a separate activity.
- Support leaders in building ownership of Health, Safety & Wellbeing and creating a proactive learning culture.

As our new Health, Safety & Wellbeing lead you will become part of the Water & Maritime technical and EE30 portfolio development team. The technical team defines and drives how projects are delivered across Water & Maritime, ensuring consistent, high-quality, safe and scalable outcomes globally. It brings together digital, data, technology and knowledge to improve productivity, enable reuse and embed continuous improvement in delivery. As part of this team, you will help ensure Health, Safety & Wellbeing is fully integrated into technical delivery, project performance, capability development and continuous improvement across the business line.
This role reports directly to the Technical Director – Water & Maritime.
This role can be based either in the Netherlands or in the UK but requires international travel throughout the year.
What you bring
- Strong communication and influencing skills, enabling you to engage and guide stakeholders at all levels with clarity and credibility.
- Comfortable working with data and translating insights into practical actions.
- Strong coaching and facilitation skills, allowing you to support and develop others effectively.
- Thrive in complex, international environments and demonstrate the cultural awareness, adaptability and resilience needed to work across diverse teams.
- Emotional intelligence enables you to build trust, navigate challenges and foster a positive and inclusive culture.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. Engineering, Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety or similar)
- Proven experience helping organisations embed Heath & Safety within engineering, environmental consulting, infrastructure, project delivery, design, or construction environments
- Solid understanding of Health & Safety regulations, standards and best practices across multiple jurisdictions with the ability to translate requirements into practical ways of working.
- Proven ability to influence leaders, technical specialists and project teams and contribute to cultural and behavioural change
- Practical experience supporting field-based or construction-related activities
- Strong capability in incident investigation, root cause analysis, risk management and organisational learning
- Knowledge of wellbeing principles and frameworks, including psychological safety and their application in high-performance environments
