Life Safety Systems Manager
Hybrid Role, 60% Office based in Weybridge
Contract Length: 3 – 6 months
Rate: Negotiable

About the Role
Seeking an experienced Life Safety Systems Manager to act as the technical authority for life safety infrastructure across a complex, highly regulated scientific estate. You will lead governance, assurance and compliance activities, ensuring critical systems remain safe, resilient and fully aligned with statutory requirements and industry best practice.
This role is central to maintaining operational continuity and safety across the Weybridge site and wider science estate, supporting both day‑to‑day operations and major capital programmes.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical lead and subject matter expert for all life safety systems.
- Provide governance, assurance and compliance oversight across critical safety infrastructure.
- Lead performance management and assurance of:
- Fire detection & alarm systems
- Fire suppression (gas, sprinklers)
- Emergency & escape lighting
- Smoke control & pressurisation
- Oxygen depletion monitoring
- Man‑trapped alarms
- Emergency egress & protected building systems
- Ensure systems are maintained, tested, validated and fully operational.
- Develop and maintain technical standards, procedures and best‑practice guidance.
- Conduct audits, inspections and technical assurance reviews.
- Identify and mitigate operational, engineering and compliance risks.
- Support incident investigations and produce technical reports and recommendations.
- Act as Intelligent Client, overseeing FM suppliers and contractors.
- Review designs, modifications and installations for regulatory compliance.
- Support capital projects (design reviews, commissioning, FAT/SAT).
- Maintain accurate asset information and compliance documentation.
- Support lifecycle planning, investment decisions and budget planning.
- Deliver training, guidance and competency development for engineers and contractors.
- Drive continuous improvement, resilience and performance optimisation.

Essential Experience
- Extensive experience managing life safety systems in complex, high‑risk or highly regulated environments.
- Strong knowledge of fire detection, suppression, emergency lighting, smoke control and gas detection systems.
- Full lifecycle experience: specification → installation → operation → maintenance.
- Deep understanding of statutory compliance, engineering governance and safety management.
- Experience conducting audits, inspections and compliance reviews.
- Strong contractor and supplier management capability.
- Experience supporting engineering investigations and root cause analysis.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Experience with asset management and contractor management systems.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment, safe systems of work and permit controls.

Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction, Safety Management or related discipline.
- IEng or CEng, or actively working towards professional registration.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent.
- Membership of IOSH, IET or similar professional body.
Desirable Experience
- NEBOSH qualification.
- Experience in laboratory, scientific, research or pharmaceutical environments.
- Understanding of BMS and integration with life safety systems.
- Knowledge of SFG20 maintenance standards.
- Experience supporting estate‑wide compliance and assurance programmes.
- Holding an existing security clearance is advantageous; however, it is not a mandatory requirement for this position.
