Role Purpose

The Health & Safety Manager is responsible for leading, maintaining, and continuously improving health and safety standards across all operations at McDonnell Price Roofing Contractors Ltd. Operating within the construction and roofing industry, the role requires regular site presence and close collaboration with Directors, site managers, and operatives. The postholder will act as the competent person for health and safety, ensuring full compliance with UK legislation, best practice, and accreditation standards including CHAS, SMAS, and SafeContractor. This is a hands-on, operational role suited to an individual confident working on live construction sites and supporting teams to deliver work safely and legally.

Key Responsibilities

Health & Safety Leadership

  • Act as the company’s competent Health & Safety Manager under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
  • Promote a strong, positive safety culture across all sites and teams.
  • Provide clear, practical advice to Directors, managers, and site operatives.

Site Inspections & Audits

  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits across multiple live construction sites.
  • Identify hazards, unsafe practices, and areas of non-compliance, ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
  • Produce written inspection reports and monitor close-out of actions.

Risk Management & RAMS

  • Prepare, review, and approve Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
  • Ensure RAMS are task-specific, suitable for roofing and construction activities, and communicated effectively to site staff.
  • Support site teams with safe systems of work and method planning.

Policies, Procedures & Compliance

  • Maintain and annually review all health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure policies remain legally compliant and aligned with operational practices.
  • Support external audits and accreditation renewals (CHAS, SMAS, SafeContractor).

Training, Toolbox Talks & Competence

  • Develop and deliver toolbox talks relevant to construction and roofing risks, including working at height.
  • Manage the annual health and safety training programme.
  • Maintain training records and competence matrices for employees and contractors.

Incident & Accident Management

  • Lead investigations into accidents, incidents, and near misses.
  • Ensure appropriate reporting, including RIDDOR where applicable.
  • Identify root causes and implement preventative measures.

Contractor & Subcontractor Management

  • Assess subcontractor competence and review health and safety documentation.
  • Monitor subcontractor compliance on site.
  • Support safe coordination of multiple trades.

Reporting & Management Information

  • Provide regular health and safety performance reports to Directors.
  • Monitor KPIs including inspections, incidents, training, and compliance.
  • Use data to inform improvements and strategic decisions.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Proven experience in a Health & Safety role within the construction industry (roofing experience preferred).
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
  • Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation.
  • Experience carrying out site inspections and audits.
  • Competent in producing and reviewing RAMS.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Willing and able to work both on site and in the office.
  • Confident communicator with the ability to influence at all levels.

Desirable

  • IOSH membership (Graduate or Chartered).
  • Experience with CHAS, SMAS, and SafeContractor accreditations.
  • Experience in roofing or working-at-height environments.

Working Environment

This role involves regular work on active construction sites and requires adherence to site safety rules and PPE requirements at all times.
