Health & Safety Manager

We are seeking a proactive Health & Safety Manager to lead the health and safety function across a well-established manufacturing and engineering business in Portsmouth.

Reporting directly to senior leadership, you'll play a critical role in ensuring compliance, driving best practice, and fostering a positive safety culture across the organisation. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys influencing change, working closely with operational teams, and championing continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the company's Health & Safety programme and strategy.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop, implement and maintain health and safety policies, procedures and safe systems of work.
  • Conduct audits, inspections and workplace assessments, ensuring corrective actions are completed.
  • Manage risk assessments, COSHH assessments, DSEAR compliance and other statutory requirements.
  • Lead accident, incident and near-miss investigations, ensuring timely reporting and root cause analysis.
  • Act as the primary contact for regulatory bodies including the HSE and Fire Authorities.
  • Support managers in developing and reviewing RAMS, procedures and compliance documentation.
  • Deliver health and safety training, toolbox talks and employee inductions.
  • Chair health and safety committee meetings and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Manage first aid arrangements, emergency preparedness plans and business-wide safety compliance activities.
  • Monitor and report on health and safety performance metrics to senior management.
  • Maintain and manage the company's asbestos register.
  • Lead, mentor and develop the Health & Safety team.

About You

To be successful in this role, you'll be a confident and influential Health & Safety professional who can build strong relationships across all levels of the business.

You'll ideally have proven experience in a Health & Safety Manager or Senior H&S position within manufacturing or engineering. As well as this you will need:

  • Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and best practice.
  • Experience conducting audits, inspections and accident investigations.
  • The ability to influence a positive safety culture across multiple departments.
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience leading and developing teams.
  • Relevant Health & Safety qualifications (e.g. NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ Level 5/6 or equivalent).
