GMP Worldwide are recruiting on behalf of a highly established aerospace manufacturing business for an experienced Health & Safety Manager to take ownership of health, safety and occupational risk across a complex, high-hazard manufacturing environment.
This is a senior and highly influential position, responsible for developing and continuously improving the company's Health & Safety management systems while ensuring full compliance with UK legislation.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Site Leadership Team and operational departments including manufacturing, engineering, maintenance, laboratories, warehousing and office functions.
You will provide both strategic leadership and practical, hands-on support, helping to maintain a proactive safety culture and ensuring employees, contractors and visitors operate within a safe and well-controlled working environment.
The Role
As Health & Safety Manager, your responsibilities will include:
- Developing and implementing the site's Health & Safety strategy in line with wider business objectives.
- Acting as the site's competent Health & Safety person and providing professional advice to directors and senior management.
- Promoting a proactive and positive safety culture through visible leadership, communication and employee engagement.
- Ensuring compliance with applicable UK Health & Safety legislation and maintaining appropriate compliance registers.
- Leading the site's risk assessment programme and reviewing risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Monitoring and controlling significant hazards associated with a high-hazard manufacturing environment.
- Leading investigations into accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences using appropriate root cause analysis techniques.
- Managing RIDDOR reporting and producing detailed investigation reports and corrective action plans.
- Maintaining and developing the company's ISO 45001 management system.
- Supporting the integration of Health & Safety systems alongside ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
- Managing internal and external Health & Safety audits and ensuring corrective actions are completed.
- Developing policies, procedures, standards and working practices.
- Managing occupational health and health surveillance programmes.
- Identifying training requirements and delivering Health & Safety training and site inductions.
- Reviewing contractor RAMS and maintaining effective contractor control procedures.
- Carrying out site inspections, audits and contractor compliance checks.
- Maintaining emergency response procedures and coordinating emergency drills.
- Liaising with external bodies including the Health and Safety Executive, Fire Authorities and other regulatory organisations where required.

- Investment casting and foundry processes.
- Silica and refractory dust.
- Hazardous substances and COSHH.
- Compressed gases.
- Machinery and PUWER.
- Lifting equipment and LOLER.
- DSEAR.
- Electrical safety.
- Working at height.
- Confined spaces.
- Manual handling.
- Contractor activity.
- Noise, vibration and respiratory exposure.
About You
Our client is looking for an experienced Health & Safety professional who is comfortable operating within a demanding engineering or manufacturing environment.
A recognised NEBOSH qualification is essential for this position and applicants without a NEBOSH qualification will not be considered.

The successful candidate will also need:
- Significant Health & Safety experience within manufacturing, engineering, aerospace, foundry, heavy industry or another high-hazard environment.
- Strong working knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation.
- Experience managing risk assessments, safe systems of work and occupational safety programmes.
- Experience investigating incidents and completing root cause analysis.
- Knowledge of RIDDOR and statutory reporting requirements.
- Previous experience working with ISO 45001 management systems.
- A strong understanding of COSHH, PUWER, LOLER, DSEAR and other relevant regulations.
- Experience managing occupational health and health surveillance programmes.
- Confidence communicating with employees at all levels, from shop-floor personnel through to senior leadership.
- The ability to influence behaviours and develop a strong safety culture.
- A practical, visible and hands-on approach to Health & Safety.
- Membership of a recognised professional body such as IOSH would also be advantageous.
Salary & Opportunity
The position offers a salary of £50,000–£65,000 per annum, dependent on experience, reflecting the seniority and responsibility of the role.
