Health and Safety Manager Thirsk, North Yorkshire | Permanent | Site-based
We’re excited to be recruiting for a Health and Safety Manager to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced health, safety and environment professional, perfect for someone passionate about building a genuine safety culture in a busy manufacturing environment — not just a compliant one.
You’ll be responsible for health, safety and environment: driving performance against agreed KPI targets, keeping our policies, systems and audit programme fit for purpose, leading incident investigation and regulatory reporting, and working alongside the site leadership team to deliver the manufacturing unit’s health, safety and environment plan.
Responsibilities
- Drive health, safety and environment performance at the manufacturing unit, delivering against agreed KPI targets.
- Keep the site’s health, safety and environment policies and systems current and effective, so we meet all relevant legislation and our internal standards for health, safety, environment and site security.
- Lead the investigation of lost time incidents, manage the incident recording system and see action plans through to closure.
- Report incidents to the enforcing authorities accurately and on time, in line with the relevant regulations.
- Lead the site’s audit programme, recommending improvements and closing out the issues it identifies.
- Co-ordinate local stakeholder and regulator relationships — EA, HSE, customers and the local community.
- Develop and deliver the manufacturing unit’s health, safety and environment plan with the site leadership team.
- Make sure health, safety and environment is considered in every Capex project, in line with Group policy and insurance requirements.
- Build behavioural safety and environmental awareness across all functions, including the training that supports it.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
