Health & Safety Manager – Rail Infrastructure
Location: East London & Project Sites Sector: Civil Engineering / Rail / Water Infrastructure Position: Permanent
We are recruiting for an experienced Health & Safety Manager to join an established civil engineering contractor delivering a major infrastructure project in London, alongside additional water infrastructure schemes across the region.
A key focus of the role will be a major multi-million-pound civils project involving the construction of new sewer infrastructure, with works interfacing with DLR, London Underground and Jubilee line infrastructure.
The successful candidate will spend approximately three days per week on the main London project, with the remainder of their time supporting other water and pipeline projects. This is a senior H&S position requiring someone with strong major construction experience, particularly around temporary works and rail interfaces, who is also capable of managing and leading a safety team.
The Role
As Health & Safety Manager, you will take responsibility for supporting and maintaining high standards of health, safety and compliance across complex infrastructure works.

Key responsibilities will include:
- Managing and providing leadership to the Health & Safety team.
- Providing H&S leadership and support across a major civil engineering project.
- Supporting works involving interfaces with operational rail and transport infrastructure.
- Providing H&S oversight around temporary works activities.
- Carrying out regular site inspections, audits and safety reviews.
- Providing practical H&S advice and guidance to Project Managers, Site Managers and operational teams.
- Ensuring works comply with company procedures, legislation and project requirements.
- Reviewing RAMS, Construction Phase Plans and other H&S documentation.
- Identifying hazards, trends and areas for improvement.
- Leading and supporting accident, incident and near-miss investigations.
- Monitoring subcontractor compliance and site working practices.
- Supporting toolbox talks, safety briefings and workforce engagement.
- Driving continuous improvement and maintaining a strong safety culture across project teams.

About You
We are looking for someone with:
- Strong temporary works experience.
- Previous rail experience, ideally involving projects interfacing with live or operational rail infrastructure.
- Previous experience as a Health & Safety Manager or in a senior H&S position within civil engineering, rail or major infrastructure.
- Experience managing and leading a safety team.
- A NEBOSH qualification.
- Strong experience working across complex construction sites.
- Good knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation and construction regulations.
- Experience with audits, inspections, RAMS and incident investigations.
- The confidence to challenge unsafe practices while working collaboratively with project and site teams.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between project locations.
