The Role
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Health, Safety Manager to take responsibility for developing, implementing and monitoring the company's H&S strategy across all projects and operational sites.
This is a site-focused position offering considerable variety and the opportunity to work closely with Directors, Project Managers, site teams, employees and subcontractors across a diverse range of electrical, energy, solar and construction projects.
The successful candidate will provide practical, commercially aware H&S advice and support, ensuring that our projects operate safely, efficiently and in accordance with current UK legislation and best practice.
You will play a key role in strengthening our existing safety culture, identifying operational risks and opportunities, and bringing new and creative thinking to the business while maintaining exceptional H&S standards.
Key Responsibilities
H&S Strategy & Leadership
- Develop, implement and monitor the company's Health, Safety & Environmental strategy across all sites.
- Work closely with the Director and senior management team to ensure the company's H&S strategy is successfully implemented and continually improved.
- Manage and develop a strong Health and Safety-focused culture throughout the business.
- Promote positive safety behaviours and encourage employees and subcontractors to take ownership of Health and Safety.
- Develop and implement effective H&S briefing and communication strategies to ensure that important information, policies and the Health and Safety plan are understood and implemented by all employees and subcontractors.
- Bring new ideas, innovative approaches and creative thinking to the business while maintaining high standards of compliance and safety.
- Implementation of ISO 45001.
Site & Project Support
- Engage regularly with all sites and project teams, providing practical Health and support and guidance.
- Carry out regular site inspections, audits and Health & Safety reviews.
- Identify potential operational risks, hazards and opportunities and work with project teams to ensure appropriate and effective responses are implemented.
- Monitor site activities and working practices to ensure compliance with company procedures, project requirements and current UK legislation.
- Monitor subcontractor compliance and promote safe working practices across all projects.
- Support Project Managers and site teams in resolving Health and Safety issues and queries.

Risk Assessments, RAMS & Safe Systems of Work
- Review and assist with the preparation of RAMS and safe systems of work.
- Provide practical advice to Project Managers and site teams regarding risk controls and safe working arrangements.
- Ensure appropriate Health & Safety documentation is in place, communicated and understood.
- Respond to Health and Safety-related queries from project teams, employees and subcontractors.
- Support the development and maintenance of Construction Phase Plans and associated H&S documentation.
Compliance & Legislation
- Ensure projects comply with company procedures and current UK Health & Safety legislation.
- Keep fully up to date with changes to Health and Safety legislation, guidance and industry best practice.
- Communicate relevant legislative and regulatory changes to management and project teams.
- Advise the business on appropriate actions required to maintain compliance.
- Maintain relevant company accreditations and compliance systems.
- Ensure appropriate records, policies, procedures and reporting systems are maintained.
- Liaise with external bodies, consultants, regulators and other relevant organisations in relation to Health and Safety.
Training, Communication & Engagement
- Conduct and coordinate Health & Safety training as required.
- Deliver toolbox talks, briefings and safety communications.
- Develop engaging Health & Safety communications that are appropriate for both site and office-based employees.
- Ensure employees and subcontractors understand relevant policies, procedures, RAMS and site-specific requirements.
- Identify training needs and work with management to ensure appropriate training is delivered.
- Maintain appropriate training and competency records.
Incidents, Accidents & Near Misses
- Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses where required.
- Identify root causes and recommend appropriate corrective and preventative actions.
- Ensure incidents are appropriately recorded, reported and followed up.
- Monitor completion of corrective actions and communicate lessons learned across the business where appropriate.
- Liaise with external bodies where required in relation to incidents or H&S matters.
Supply Chain & Subcontractor Management
- Monitor subcontractor Health & Safety performance and compliance.
- Support supply chain compliance checks, including relevant licences, policies, qualifications and competencies.
- Ensure subcontractors receive appropriate site information, briefings and HS&E requirements.
- Work with Project Managers to address areas of non-compliance and improve subcontractor performance.

Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain appropriate Health, Safety and Environmental documentation and records.
- Support the preparation of management reports and HS&E performance information.
- Ensure audit, inspection, training, incident and corrective-action records are maintained accurately.
- Support Project Managers with the collation of project documentation, including relevant H&S information for O&M manuals where required.
Skills & Experience
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Previous Health & Safety experience within the construction, engineering, electrical contracting, M&E or building services industry.
- Experience operating in a site-focused Health & Safety role.
- Strong knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation and construction site requirements.
- Experience with RAMS, risk assessments, site inspections, audits and safe systems of work.
- Experience monitoring subcontractor compliance and contractor management.
- Experience conducting or supporting accident, incident and near-miss investigations.
- Experience delivering toolbox talks, inductions, briefings and Health & Safety training.
- Strong understanding of fire safety, occupational health and workplace risks.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage confidently with Directors, Project Managers, engineers, site teams, employees and subcontractors.
- The ability to provide practical, commercially aware solutions rather than simply identifying problems.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- The ability to work independently, prioritise workload and manage multiple projects.
- A proactive approach with the confidence to challenge unsafe practices and influence positive change.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Qualifications
Essential:
- NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent Health & Safety qualification.
- Good working knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation.
- Previous experience in a construction, engineering or related operational environment.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- GCSE grade 4 or above in maths and English.
Desirable:
- NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction Certificate.
- IOSH membership or relevant IOSH qualification.
- Experience within M&E, electrical contracting, building services, energy or renewable energy.
- Knowledge of CDM 2015 and the Principal Contractor role.
- ISO 45001 management system
- Experience with Constructionline or other industry accreditation/compliance systems.
