Health & Safety Manager
Role Overview
The Health & Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring the business is fully compliant with all Health and Safety standards. This role involves driving a positive Health and Safety culture, managing the H&S department within the agreed budget, and ensuring the business is audit-ready.
Main Duties
Site Health & Safety
- Lead in developing a health and safety culture.
- Challenge existing practices and procedures.
- Communicate effectively with all levels of the business.
- Provide training and instruction on H&S essentials.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation.
- Maintain records and assist with audits.
- Safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of staff and visitors.
- Be the gatekeeper for safety on new equipment introductions.
- Maintain and review RA & PUWER assessments.
- Liaise with enforcement agencies.
- Lead regular meetings on Health and Safety performance.
- Lead area improvement initiatives on accident trends.
- Support the projects team with intel and justification for business cases.
Site Security / Evacuation
- Maintain the physical security of the site and workers.
- Regularly carry out Fire Drills.
- Ensure adequate emergency cover is provided.
- Be available for advice and support during out-of-hours events.
Welfare and Community
- Build positive connections with neighbours and the local community.

Key Relationships
- Manage stakeholder relationships with the whole business regarding Health & Safety.
- Produce monthly reports for the Head of Production/SLT on KPIs/incidents/legal, best practice changes.
Key Accountabilities
- Compliance with externally certified standards (BRC, ISO, COP’s).
- Zero Red non-conformities from Group Health and Safety Audits.
- Compliance in all site audits from Customers and Ethical from a Health and Safety perspective.
- Ensure all relevant Risk Assessments are suitable and sufficient and up to date.
- Ensure all equipment meets PUWER requirements.
- Monitor, record, and manage the site's accident frequency rate (AFR).
Person Specification And Skill Requirements
- Strong knowledge of Environmental and Health and Safety regulatory and legal framework.
- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
- Ability to foresee the possibility of risks occurring before they happen.
- Working knowledge of site services.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytic skills.
- Ability to present data suitable for the intended audience.
Qualifications
- National Examining Body of Safety Health (NEBOSH) recognised qualification (or equivalent).
- ISO 45001 experience & lead auditor qualification (BRC or ISO).
Specific Knowledge & Experience
- Extensive experience of creating a positive H&S culture in a food manufacturing environment.
- Experience of facilities management within a manufacturing environment (desirable).
- Working knowledge of BRC, ISO45001, SMETA/SEDEX, and COP’s.
- Experience of leading and developing teams.
- Food Manufacturing experience (desirable).
