Objective

To develop, implement, monitor, and continuously improve the company's Health & Safety management systems across all three sites, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, manufacturer standards, and company policies. The Health & Safety Manager will promote a positive safety culture, reduce workplace risks, and ensure the health, safety, and wellbeing of employees, contractors, customers, and visitors.

Reporting

The Health & Safety Manager will report to the Aftersales Director.

Key Responsibilities

Health & Safety Management

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the company's Health & Safety Management System.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Health & Safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and associated regulations.
  • Maintain and review company Health & Safety policies, procedures, and risk assessments.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through leadership, communication, and employee engagement.
  • Advise senior management on Health & Safety strategy and legal obligations.

Compliance & Auditing

  • Conduct regular site inspections and formal audits across all three locations.
  • Monitor compliance with manufacturer standards and industry best practice.
  • Ensure statutory inspections and testing are completed, including lifting equipment, pressure systems, workshop equipment, extraction systems, and fire safety systems.
  • Maintain compliance records and prepare for external inspections and audits.

Risk Management

  • Carry out and review risk assessments and safe systems of work.
  • Ensure COSHH assessments are completed and maintained.
  • Review manual handling activities and implement suitable controls.
  • Monitor workplace hazards and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure appropriate PPE requirements are identified and enforced.

Workshop Safety

  • Monitor safe working practices within HGV workshops.
  • Ensure safe use of vehicle lifts, pits, cranes, lifting equipment, diagnostic equipment, compressed air systems, and specialist workshop machinery.
  • Review contractor activities and permit-to-work systems where applicable.
  • Support safe working around electric, hybrid, and alternative fuel commercial vehicles.
  • Ensure housekeeping standards are maintained.

Incident Management

  • Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses, and dangerous occurrences.
  • Identify root causes and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Report RIDDOR incidents where required.
  • Monitor accident trends and produce management reports.

Training & Competence

  • Identify Health & Safety training requirements across the business.
  • Deliver or coordinate Health & Safety induction training.
  • Organise refresher training, toolbox talks, and safety briefings.
  • Support managers in developing competent teams.
  • Maintain training records and competency matrices.

Fire & Emergency Preparedness

  • Ensure suitable fire risk assessments are completed.
  • Coordinate fire evacuation procedures and drills.
  • Manage emergency response arrangements.
  • Liaise with emergency services where necessary.

Occupational Health & Wellbeing

  • Support occupational health initiatives.
  • Monitor workplace health risks including noise, vibration, hazardous substances, and workplace stress.
  • Coordinate health surveillance programmes where required.

Environmental Responsibilities

  • Support environmental compliance relating to waste management, hazardous waste, oil storage, spill response, and pollution prevention.
  • Assist with sustainability and environmental improvement initiatives.

Contractor Management

  • Assess contractor competence.
  • Ensure contractors comply with company Health & Safety procedures.
  • Monitor contractor performance while on site.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate Health & Safety records.
  • Produce monthly KPI reports for senior management.
  • Monitor corrective action plans.
  • Maintain audit schedules and compliance documentation.

Person Specification

Essential

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate (minimum).
  • Demonstrable experience in a Health & Safety management role.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation.
  • Experience conducting risk assessments and accident investigations.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills.
  • Strong organisational and report-writing abilities.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Willingness to travel regularly between all three sites.

Desirable

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent Level 6 qualification.
  • Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) (GradIOSH, TechIOSH, or CMIOSH).
  • Experience within commercial vehicle, automotive, transport, engineering, or manufacturing environments.
  • Internal Auditor qualification.
  • First Aid at Work qualification.
  • Fire Risk Assessment training.
  • Environmental management experience (ISO 14001).
  • Experience with ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Reduction in accident and incident rates.
  • Completion of scheduled site inspections and audits.
  • Closure of corrective actions within agreed timescales.
  • Completion of mandatory training.
  • Reduction in lost-time injuries.
  • RIDDOR compliance.
  • Assistance with achieving and maintaining ISO 45001
  • Employee engagement in Health & Safety initiatives.

Authority

The Health & Safety Manager Has Authority To:

  • Stop work where there is an immediate risk of serious injury or harm.
  • Recommend disciplinary action where serious breaches of Health & Safety procedures occur.
  • Require corrective actions from managers following inspections or investigations.
  • Escalate significant risks directly to senior management/Directors
