About the Role
As H&S Officer, you will be responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and maintenance of the organisation's health and safety management systems. The role will ensure compliance with UK health and safety legislation, promote a positive safety culture, and work with managers and employees to reduce risk, prevent incidents, and improve overall health and safety performance.
Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and all relevant UK legislation.
- Monitor changes in legislation and advise management on compliance requirements.
- Assist in developing, reviewing, and implementing health and safety policies, procedures, and safe systems of work.
- Conduct and review workplace risk assessments, COSHH assessments, and task-specific assessments.
- Identify workplace hazards and recommend effective control measures.
- Assist managers in implementing risk reduction strategies.
- Monitor the effectiveness of corrective and preventive actions.
- Carry out regular workplace inspections and safety audits.
- Monitor compliance with safe working practices and company procedures.
- Produce inspection reports and track actions through to completion.
- Participate in client, regulatory, and certification audits.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses, and dangerous occurrences.
- Conduct root cause analysis and prepare detailed investigation reports.
- Recommend corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence.
- Ensure incidents are reported and recorded in accordance with company procedures and RIDDOR requirements.
- Deliver health and safety inductions for employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Conduct toolbox talks, safety briefings, and awareness campaigns.
- Support managers in developing employee safety competence.
- Encourage employee participation in health and safety initiatives.
- Assist with emergency response planning and business continuity arrangements.
- Coordinate emergency drills and exercises.
- Ensure emergency equipment and procedures are maintained and regularly tested.
- Review contractor RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements).
- Ensure contractors operate in accordance with site safety requirements.
- Monitor contractor performance and compliance during works.
- Maintain accurate health and safety records and documentation.
- Produce monthly health and safety performance reports.
- Monitor safety KPIs and identify trends.
- Support management meetings with safety performance data and recommendations.

- NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
- Full UK Driving Licence
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a health and safety role
- Experience conducting risk assessments and workplace inspections
- Experience investigating incidents and implementing corrective actions
- Strong knowledge of UK H&S legislation and best practices
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to influence and engage employees at all levels
- Strong report-writing and presentation skills
- Excellent organisational and planning abilities
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
Desirable:
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification
- Membership of IOSH (TechIOSH or higher)
- Internal auditor qualification
- Experience within manufacturing, engineering, or industrial environments
