Job Overview
The Health and Safety trainer plays a key role within the Health, Safety and Security Services Team, supporting the Health Board in meeting its statutory and organisational responsibilities for health, safety and staff wellbeing. The post holder will help design, deliver and evaluate a range of health and safety training programmes, ensuring staff have the knowledge, skills and competence required to work safely and minimise workplace risks.
Working closely with colleagues across the organisation, the role involves developing and maintaining training materials, delivering both practical and classroom-based learning, monitoring training compliance, and supporting the achievement of organisational targets and key performance indicators. The post holder will provide guidance and practical instruction to a wide range of staff groups, promoting a positive safety culture and encouraging best practice in health and safety management.
In addition to delivering training, the role will support key health and safety initiatives and projects. The successful candidate will be an effective communicator, confident trainer, and proactive team member committed to improving health, safety and wellbeing across the Health Board.
Main duties of the job
- Help design, develop and deliver health, safety and security training programmes.
- Support the achievement of the Health Board's training objectives and compliance requirements.
- Update lesson plans, presentations and training resources to reflect changes in legislation, policy, procedures and equipment as requested by managers.
- Deliver engaging training sessions to a variety of staff groups using both theory and practical methods.
- Provide advice, guidance and support to staff to help them work safely and effectively.
- Under direction coordinate training activities, including course scheduling, participant enrolment and administration.
- Maintain accurate training records, databases and attendance information to monitor compliance and report performance.
- Support health and safety projects, audits and improvement initiatives.
- Promote a positive health and safety culture throughout the organisation.

The post holder under guidance will deliver a wide range of accredited and non-accredited health and safety training programmes across the Health Board, ensuring staff develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to work safely and comply with organisational and legislative requirements. Using a variety of teaching methods, including presentations, practical demonstrations, assessments and coaching, they will support learners with different learning needs and promote a culture of continuous learning and safe practice.

The role involves contributing to the planning, coordinating and delivering of training programmes, maintaining training records and compliance data, evaluating course effectiveness, and supporting the achievement of organisational targets and key performance indicators. The post holder will work collaboratively with Health, Safety and Security Advisors and Service Managers to design, review and update training materials, lesson plans and learning resources to ensure they remain current and effective.
Person specification
Qualifications And/or Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Educated to NVQ Level 4 or equivalent relevant experience.
- Good general education with a minimum of GCSE C in English and Maths.
- Good level of IT skills including Word, Power-point Spreadsheet, Publisher and Databases.
- Excellent presentation, verbal, written and demonstration skills.
- Demonstrate a practical, problem solving approach to manual handling issues.
- Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and the risk assessment process, and their application to manual handling in the workplace.
Desirable criteria
- European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in a healthcare setting where patient moving and handling activities were required.
- Significant working within a healthcare setting.
- Confident presentation skills in a group setting.
- Good time-management with an ability to keep a training session on schedule.
- Can exhibit excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Can show an ability to cope under pressure e.g. work within time constraints
- Adaptable approach to team working.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working as a manual handling champion
- Previous experience working/volunteering in group settings
- Have previous experience of demonstrating patient handling techniques and use of equipment, or working as a training assistant.
