We’re looking for kind, compassionate, caring individuals to join the RUH and help support our nursing team on SAU.
Our Clinical Healthcare Support Workers are integral to our nursing teams. It takes flexibility, commitment and compassion, but in return we can offer you a rewarding career where you can really make a difference and leave at the end of each shift feeling proud of the work you have done to support patients to feel their best.
Before you start working in the SAU, we will provide you with all the training you need. You will start on our induction programme to help you settle in and we’ll teach you all the skills you need to do the role, plus we will start you working towards achieving the Care Certificate (if you do not already hold this qualification).
If you’re looking for a caring role that can open doors to new opportunities, this could be the role for you. Many of our Clinical Healthcare Support Workers progress to registered nurses by taking the apprenticeship route while working at the RUH with full support from our nursing teams.
Main duties of the job
Duties
You'll work under the guidance of a healthcare professional such as a nurse and your job will vary depending on the ward you are based. Your daily duties will be varied to include:
- Helping patients get up, washed and dressed, taking patients to the toilet, helping at mealtimes
- Contribute to patient assessments such as blood pressure monitoring, oxygen saturation levels, body temperature
- Recording your actions accurately in patient notes.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
The skills we are looking for:
- You need to be able to understand and communicate both verbally and in writing in English
- You don’t need any formal qualifications in maths but you will need to have numerical and analytic skills to do patient observations
- You will need to have a customer focused approach which is essential to providing patients with the best possible experience
- You will need to be able to use IT systems and databases
- You will have the skill to focus on the details with the ability to spot problems. You will know when you are able to correct or when to escalate.
Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Completed Care Certificate or we will support you to complete it within 3 months of joining.
- Literacy and Numeracy level 2 or equivalent (GCSE D-G)
- Knowledge and skills gained through any combination of alternative study and/or employment experience
Desirable criteria
- Level 2 and/or 3 qualification in Health and Social Care/Clinical Care or working towards an award
- Completion of a Secure English Language Test (SELT) if English is not your first language.

Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in a public facing/customer care role or environment
- Able to work in a team environment
- Flexible approach to shift patterns and unit needs which may involve working in different areas or cross site working
- Able to use initiative within the boundaries of the role
Desirable criteria
- Experience working in a health/health and social care role
- NHS experience / understanding of NHS/social care systems

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
