Health and Safety Advisor
Role Overview
Act as principal health and safety advisor for Rheinmetall Services’ training, office and facilities activities.
Key Responsibilities
Health and Safety Leadership
- Promote a positive safety culture and integrate safety into operational and training decisions.
- Guide managers, training teams and stakeholders on health, safety, environmental and occupational health responsibilities.
Risk Management
- Develop, review and maintain suitable, sufficient and proportionate risk assessments for military training, office activities, facilities, DSE, manual handling, fire safety and contractors.
- Identify hazards, implement controls and review risks at appropriate intervals.
- Support dynamic risk assessments during training exercises.
- Develop safe systems of work, operating procedures and training safety documentation.
Training Assurance and Compliance
- Monitor compliance with relevant legislation, organisational policies and contractual requirements.
- Conduct audits, inspections and assurance activities across training sites, offices and facilities.
- Ensure training follows approved procedures and safe systems of work.
- Produce findings and recommendations, supporting compliance with workplace safety, welfare and environmental requirements.
Occupational Health and Wellbeing
- Support occupational health programmes, health surveillance and wellbeing initiatives.
- Help managers address stress, fatigue, ergonomics and welfare risks.
Facilities and Workplace Safety
- Support fire safety, evacuation procedures, emergency response and business continuity planning.
- Ensure appropriate first aid and welfare arrangements.
- Liaise with landlords, facilities providers, contractors, regulators and enforcement authorities on health, safety and environmental requirements.
- Monitor applicable statutory inspections and equipment and facilities maintenance.
- Provide HSE support for workplace moves, refurbishments, office fit-outs and internal departments.
Incident Management
- Lead or support investigations into accidents, incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences.
- Identify root causes, recommend corrective and preventive actions, and verify their implementation and effectiveness.
- Maintain accurate records and report safety performance.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build effective relationships with military customers, training teams, facilities management and regulators.
- Integrate safety into planning meetings and exercise design reviews.
- Provide expert advice during training exercises and operationally realistic scenarios.

Health and Safety Training
- Design and deliver safety briefings, workshops and awareness sessions.
- Coach managers and instructors on their responsibilities.
- Help managers, instructors and subject matter experts complete and review risk assessments.
Continuous Improvement
- Analyse safety trends and performance data to identify improvements.
- Promote best practice and innovation.
- Contribute to health and safety strategies, policies and procedures.
Essential Qualifications
- NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent).
- Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH) or working towards chartered status.
- Recognised qualification in risk assessment and incident investigation.
- Full UK driving licence.
Essential Experience
- Significant experience in health and safety management within military, defence, emergency services, heavy industry, or similarly high-risk environments.
- Experience supporting the delivery of operational, field-based, or practical training activities.
- Proven experience conducting audits, inspections, and compliance assessments.
- Experience investigating accidents and incidents using recognised methodologies.
- Demonstrable experience developing risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Experience influencing and advising managers and senior stakeholders.
- Experience of managing health and safety within office, workplace or corporate environments.
- Experience conducting workplace inspections, DSE assessments, and office-based risk assessments.
- Experience supporting facilities management and contractor control processes.
- Knowledge and practical application of fire safety and emergency planning requirements.
Desirable Experience
- Experience within Defence, MOD, Armed Forces, or military training environments.
- Knowledge of Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT).
- Experience supporting live exercises, field training, or adventure training activities.
- Experience working within ISO 45001-certified environments.
- Previous service in the Armed Forces or defence sector.
- Experience managing environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives.
- Experience working closely with facilities management providers.
- NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of UK health and safety legislation and best practice.
- Knowledge of risk management principles and safety management systems.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
