Health, Safety and Environment Technician Apprentice

We are offering an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to begin a rewarding career as a Health, Safety and Environment Technician Apprentice, supporting the development and promotion of safe, healthy and environmentally responsible working practices across the organisation.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Throughout the apprenticeship, you will develop a broad range of technical and professional skills, including risk assessments.

We are offering the opportunity for a motivated candidate to begin a rewarding career as a Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Technician Apprentice, supporting the development and promotion of safe, healthy and environmentally responsible working practices across the organisation.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone at the start of their career, or for an individual looking for a change in their existing career path while gaining a nationally recognised qualification. Working alongside experienced professionals, you will learn how to identify workplace hazards, support risk assessments, investigate incidents, monitor compliance, and contribute to initiatives that help create a positive safety culture.

Throughout the apprenticeship, you will develop a broad range of technical and professional skills, including risk management, accident prevention, environmental awareness, auditing, data analysis, communication and stakeholder engagement. You will gain practical experience in applying health, safety and environmental legislation, supporting continuous improvement activities, and helping ensure the wellbeing of employees, contractors and visitors.

As part of the programme, you will work towards a recognised apprenticeship qualification and gain industry-recognised professional development, helping to build a strong foundation for a long-term career within the health, safety and environmental profession.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the development and implementation of the Lionweld Kennedy Health & Safety Plan and Environmental Plan
  • Maintain health, safety and environmental management systems, procedures and records in line with company policies and legal requirements
  • Assist line managers in understanding and meeting their health, safety and environmental responsibilities
  • Prepare and submit health, safety and environmental documentation to regulatory bodies, certification bodies and external stakeholders
  • Assist with accident, incident and near-miss investigations, including recording findings and monitoring completion of corrective actions
  • Support continuous improvement projects and action plans aimed at enhancing workplace safety, environmental performance and overall compliance
  • Assist with maintaining the company's ISO 45001 accreditation, including supporting audits and compliance activities
  • Prepare monthly Health & Safety performance reports and other management information as required
  • Maintain the accident, incident and near-miss reporting system, ensuring all records are accurate and up to date
  • Coordinate health and safety training records, update training matrices, and monitor renewal dates for qualifications, certifications and medical assessments
  • Schedule, track and maintain workplace risk assessments, ensuring they are reviewed and updated when required
  • Support the planning and organisation of internal audits, site inspections and regulatory visits by ensuring all required documentation is available
  • Act as the first point of contact for routine Health & Safety queries and assist with the coordination of toolbox talks and safety communications
  • Maintain organised Health & Safety files and records to ensure documentation is easily accessible and audit-ready

What you'll learn

Course contents

  • Present and hold an audience's attention, for example when delivering SHE training, toolbox talks, inductions or presenting data or investigation findings to the workforce or management team. Show they can sell the SHE message, have personal impact, deal with challenge, reflect on personal performance, use appropriate language for the audience
  • Assist the management team in the development, management, implementation and monitoring of the Safety, Health and Environmental Management System by updating systems in line with changes in legislation or best practice, delivering training, coaching operational teams and undertaking workplace inspections
  • Provide advice on the practical implementation of the company's SHE policies and processes applying generic industry guidance into the context of the workplace
  • Identify the hazards and evaluate: workplace instructions that are relevant to the individual’s job; working practices in the individual’s job that may harm themselves or others’; aspects of the individual’s job that could harm themselves or others; which of the potentially harmful working practices and aspects of the individual’s work present the highest risks to themselves or others; how to deal with hazards in accordance with workplace instructions and legal requirements
  • Support the practical application of the workplace instructions and suppliers or manufacturers instructions for the safe use of equipment, materials and products
  • Support and assist in the implementation of SHE inspections and monitoring systems demonstrating the balance between enforcement and internal support
  • Undertake and/or assist with the monitoring, analysis of and reporting of SHE performance
  • Prepare and maintain records relating to safety, health and environmental matters that comply with legal and workplace requirements and are accessible to those who are authorised to use them. E.g. records associated with Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment Regulations, Noise at Work Regulations, Hand Arm Vibration Regulations or Environmental Permitting Regulations
  • Assist the management team in establishing, managing and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, Health and Safety Executive, Environment Agency, Occupational Health, Occupational Hygienists and others as required and directed
  • Research Safety, Health and Environmental Issues and best practices. Review updates of health and safety regulations e.g. changes to Construction, Design and Management Regulations or updates to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health along with workplace instructions, making sure that information is from reliable sources
  • Assist and/or manage the investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents as directed
  • Recognise where decisions have a financial cost and assisting to develop a budget
  • Recognise situations where the activity will benefit from contributions and expertise of other internal departments such as HR, Finance, IT or Occupational Health

Training schedule

During your apprenticeship you will undergo remote learning through live webinars, forums, one to ones with a dedicated learning coach. You will receive constant feedback and coaching through RHG’s team of experienced learning coaches. You will gain the Level 3 Safety Health and Environment Technician Standard qualification, an IOSH approved Accident Investigation Certificate. You will be eligible to apply to the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) for Tech IOSH status on successful completion of your programme.

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:
Math & English (grade A*/9 to C/5)
