The Role
At South Staffs Water, the safety and wellbeing of our people is our highest priority. We're looking for a proactive and influential Health & Safety Business Partner to support our operational teams, drive continuous improvement, and help embed a strong safety culture across the business.
Reporting to the Health & Safety Manager, you'll work closely with operational managers, supervisors and subject matter experts to ensure our health and safety standards are translated into practical, effective ways of working that keep our people safe and support operational excellence.
We're looking for someone who is passionate about making health and safety relevant, engaging and practical. This is an excellent opportunity for a health and safety professional who enjoys building relationships, influencing positive behaviours and working directly with frontline teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Partnering with operational teams to translate Group Health & Safety standards into practical procedures, guidance, templates and safe systems of work.
- Supporting managers and supervisors to embed critical risks and controls within risk assessments and day-to-day operations.
- Developing and reviewing risk assessments that accurately reflect work as performed and provide clear guidance for safe working practices.
- Promoting high-quality incident and near-miss reporting that drives meaningful learning and continuous improvement.
- Identifying workplace health risks and supporting the implementation of appropriate health surveillance programmes.
- Supporting internal audits, inspections and assurance activities, including the management of contractor and supplier safety performance.
- Managing and promoting the use of the EcoOnline incident reporting platform to support reporting, investigation and trend analysis.
- Providing practical health and safety advice and support to managers and employees across the business.
- Supporting the delivery of key health and safety objectives, KPIs and improvement initiatives.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
