About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and proactive Health, Safety & Compliance Manager to join our engineering business and take responsibility for maintaining and continually improving our Health & Safety, compliance and environmental standards across our workshop, offices and customer sites.
This is a hands-on role involving regular site inspections, workshop inspections, audits, RAMS, training, incident investigation, compliance management and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will work closely with our management, engineering and project teams to ensure that Health & Safety and compliance requirements are incorporated into projects from initial planning through to completion.
We are particularly interested in candidates with an engineering, manufacturing, mechanical or construction background, who understand how engineering projects are designed, fabricated, installed and commissioned.
Experience of project management and working within an engineering environment would be highly advantageous.
Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety
- Take responsibility for the day-to-day management and development of the company's Health & Safety systems.
- Maintain and continually improve Health & Safety policies, procedures and processes.
- Ensure compliance with relevant UK Health & Safety legislation and client requirements.
- Maintain the company's risk assessment and method statement (RAMS) processes.
- Review and approve RAMS for workshop and site activities.
- Carry out regular workplace and site inspections.
- Identify hazards, unsafe practices and areas for improvement.
- Investigate accidents, near misses and incidents and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain Health & Safety records and action plans.
- Promote a strong and proactive Health & Safety culture throughout the business.
Site Inspections & Project Support
- Regularly travel to customer sites throughout the UK to carry out Health & Safety inspections and audits.
- Inspect engineering installation, fabrication, maintenance and commissioning activities.
- Liaise with client H&S teams, site managers, CDM teams and other contractors.
- Attend site Health & Safety meetings where required.
- Review site-specific requirements, inductions, permits and RAMS.
- Carry out pre-start inspections and site audits.
- Support Project Managers and Site Managers with Health & Safety requirements.
- Ensure actions arising from inspections are followed through to completion.
- Feed lessons learned from projects back into company procedures and future projects.
Workshop Health & Safety
- Take responsibility for Health & Safety within the engineering workshop, including:
- Welding and fabrication.
- Grinding and cutting.
- Mechanical assembly.
- Pressure testing.
- Lifting operations.
- Forklift and material handling.
- Work at height.
- Machinery and power tools.
- COSHH.
- Manual handling.
- Electrical equipment.
- Compressed gases.
- Vehicle movements and workshop traffic.
- PPE and emergency equipment.
- Carry out regular workshop inspections and ensure that identified actions are addressed.

Compliance Management
- Maintain a compliance register covering relevant legislation, standards, certifications and client requirements.
- Monitor changes to legislation and industry requirements.
- Ensure required inspections, examinations, testing and certifications are completed.
- Maintain company compliance documentation and records.
- Support external audits and client audits.
- Manage corrective and preventative actions arising from audits and inspections.
- Ensure appropriate contractor and supplier compliance.
- Maintain training, competency and certification records.
- Support the development and implementation of company policies and procedures.
ISO Management Systems
- Take an active role in maintaining and developing the company's management systems, including:
- ISO 9001 – Quality
- ISO 45001 – Health & Safety
- ISO 14001 – Environmental
- Responsibilities will include:
- Supporting internal and external audits.
- Planning and carrying out internal audits.
- Maintaining audit schedules and action plans.
- Monitoring compliance against management system requirements.
- Supporting management reviews.
- Identifying opportunities for continual improvement.
- Maintaining relevant procedures, registers and records.
- Working with department managers to close out non-conformances and improvement actions.
Training & Competence
- Identify Health & Safety and compliance training requirements.
- Maintain training and competency records.
- Organise and deliver toolbox talks and safety briefings.
- Support employee and contractor inductions.
- Monitor qualifications, certifications and refresher training.
- Promote a culture where employees are encouraged to raise safety concerns and identify improvements.
Environmental Compliance
- Support the company's environmental management objectives.
- Assist with the implementation and development of ISO 14001.
- Monitor waste management, chemical storage, spill prevention and environmental controls.
- Maintain environmental procedures and records.
- Identify opportunities to reduce waste, energy use and environmental impact.
Engineering & Project Management
- An important part of this role will be working alongside the company's engineering and project management teams.
- The successful candidate should be able to understand engineering activities and identify the Health & Safety implications of different project requirements.
- This may include:
- Reviewing engineering scopes and project requirements.
- Reviewing installation methodologies and construction sequences.
- Supporting project risk assessments.
- Reviewing site mobilisation requirements.
- Supporting Project Managers with client H&S requirements.
- Identifying risks associated with fabrication, lifting, pressure testing, installation and commissioning.
- Supporting project teams when changes to scope or programme create additional risks.
- Ensuring Health & Safety requirements are incorporated into project planning.
- Balancing practical project delivery with compliance and safety requirements.

About You
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Health & Safety professional who is practical, approachable and confident working within an engineering environment. You will ideally have:
- Proven experience in Health & Safety within an engineering, manufacturing, construction or process environment.
- NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent.
- IOSH membership or equivalent.
- Experience carrying out workplace and site inspections.
- Strong knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation.
- Experience producing and reviewing RAMS.
- Experience investigating incidents and implementing corrective actions.
- Experience delivering toolbox talks and safety training.
- Good understanding of CDM and contractor management.
- Experience with ISO management systems.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel throughout the UK.
Engineering Background – Desirable
An engineering background would be particularly advantageous. This could include experience in:
- Mechanical engineering.
- Process engineering.
- Fabrication and welding.
- Pipework installation.
- Plant installation.
- Manufacturing.
- Pressure systems.
- Mechanical installation.
- Commissioning.
- Construction/site engineering.
Experience of project management or working closely with engineering project teams would also be highly desirable.
Qualifications
Essential:
- NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent.
- IOSH membership or equivalent.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable:
- NEBOSH Diploma / Level 6 qualification.
- ISO 45001 Internal Auditor / Lead Auditor.
- ISO 14001 Internal Auditor / Lead Auditor.
- Engineering qualification or engineering apprenticeship.
- Project Management qualification or relevant experience.
- CDM / Construction Health & Safety experience.
- Experience working within an ISO 9001 environment.
The Opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Health & Safety professional who wants a hands-on, varied role within an engineering business. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to take ownership of the company's Health, Safety & Compliance function and play a key role in developing our ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 systems, site safety standards, workshop processes and overall compliance culture.
