Health & Safety / Compliance Manager

Salary: £38,500 - £42,000 DOE
Contract: Temporary to permanent
Hours: 30 hours per week (Flexible & hybrid working)
Location: Somerset

Purpose of the Role

The Health & Safety / Compliance Manager will be the Designated Competent Person for Health and Safety, providing strategic leadership, expert advice and assurance across all schools.

The postholder will ensure statutory health and safety responsibilities, manage risk effectively and maintain consistent compliance arrangements. They will promote a positive, proactive safety culture and provide senior leaders and Trustees with assurance on health and safety performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the Designated Competent Person, providing expert advice to the CEO, senior leaders, schools, and Trustees.
  • Develop and implement the Trust-wide Health and Safety Strategy, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain oversight of Trust-wide health and safety risks and provide appropriate challenge, advice, and assurance.
  • Ensure effective systems are in place for risk management, statutory compliance, and health and safety monitoring.
  • Monitor changes in legislation and ensure Trust arrangements remain compliant and effective.
  • Lead a programme of health and safety audits, inspections, and compliance reviews, ensuring actions are followed through.
  • Review risk assessments and control measures, providing specialist advice on high-risk activities.
  • Lead the investigation and reporting of significant accidents, incidents, and near misses, identifying root causes and lessons learned.
  • Support schools with emergency and critical incident management.
  • Work with Estates and school teams to provide assurance on statutory premises compliance, including fire, asbestos, water hygiene, electrical, and gas safety.
  • Provide strategic oversight of educational visits and off-site activities, working with Educational Visit Coordinators to ensure appropriate risk management and compliance.
  • Develop and deliver health and safety training and guidance to ensure staff understand their responsibilities.
  • Prepare clear reports for senior leaders, Trustees, and committees on compliance, risks, incidents, and improvement actions.

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent Level 6 Health and Safety qualification.
  • CMIOSH or working towards Chartered Membership.
  • Significant senior Health and Safety experience within a complex, multi-site organisation.
  • Experience of acting as a Competent Person and advising senior leaders or governance bodies.
  • Experience of developing health and safety strategies, policies, and assurance frameworks.
  • Strong knowledge of UK Health and Safety legislation and recognised best practice.
  • A driver with access to a car
