NES Fircroft is currently recruiting for an EHS Advisor for our client, a global power technology company, working on a flagship UK interconnector project.

Site EHS Advisor

Location: Kent
Major UK Power Project
Contract role: Outside IR35

Role Purpose

Site EHS Advisors are responsible for providing primarily operational Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) support to the Site Manager and site organisation.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

Formally and publicly accept the role to provide visible, strong, and active EHS leadership within the project, acting as a champion for zero harm, environmental protection, sustainability, and wellbeing.

Dispatch Phase

  • Verify hazardous substances and chemicals are stored in appropriate locations.
  • Ensure chemical assessments are available at the point of storage.

Construction / Installation / Commissioning Phases

Site Inspection

  • Support site management by ensuring all required notices are prominently displayed.
  • Initiate fire risk assessments for site premises.
  • Ensure any missing EHS equipment is identified and obtained.

Site Mobilisation

  • Ensure the Construction Phase Plan, Traffic Management Plan (TMP), Emergency Response Plan (ERP), Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), and permits are available on site.
  • Establish and maintain EHS project files and folders.
  • Appoint project EHS Safety Representatives.
  • Ensure meeting minutes are displayed on notice boards and uploaded to project files.

Safe Systems of Work (SSoW)

  • Support site management in ensuring all project personnel have read and signed project documentation.
  • Identify non-routine activities not covered by standard documentation.
  • Provide technical EHS input on contractor and subcontractor risk assessments and method statements.

EHS Site Registrations / Inductions

  • Ensure all personnel are inducted before commencing work.
  • Ensure compliance with client-specific induction requirements.
  • Issue, control, and track visitor and spare PPE.
  • Maintain EHS project documentation.

Competency Management

  • Verify all personnel have valid certifications.
  • Deliver site inductions to new personnel.
  • Maintain induction records.
  • Deliver project-specific EHS training and toolbox talks.
  • Ensure compliance with local legislation and risk control measures.

Site Rules

  • Implement project initiatives and safety programmes.
  • Monitor compliance with site rules.
  • Escalate non-conformances to site management.

Communications

  • Deliver safety communications to all site personnel.
  • Organise monthly Safety Representative meetings.
  • Support and implement safety campaigns.

EHS Management of Subcontractors

  • Monitor subcontractor activities against approved RAMS.
  • Report non-compliance to the Site Manager and EHS leadership.

Monitoring & Assessment

  • Conduct routine and non-routine inspections during mobilisation, construction, installation, and commissioning.
  • Record inspection outcomes.
  • Report unsafe acts and unsafe conditions.
  • Log findings within company reporting systems.

Safety Observations & Incident Management

  • Receive and review safety observations and incident reports.
  • Record observations and corrective actions in reporting systems.

Investigations

  • Gather information relating to incidents and accidents.
  • Complete initial incident risk assessments.
  • Escalate significant incidents to project and EHS management.
  • Conduct root cause investigations where required.
  • Complete workflow actions within specified timescales.
  • Communicate lessons learned and corrective actions to the workforce.

Emergency Response Arrangements

  • Display emergency response information in site offices and welfare facilities.
  • Communicate emergency contacts during inductions.
  • Facilitate emergency response drills for project personnel and subcontractors.
  • Monitor emergency response equipment availability.

Reporting

  • Produce and issue weekly EHS reports.
  • Notify the Project Manager, Site Manager, and Client of EHS incidents in accordance with project requirements.

EHS Documentation

  • Compile, maintain, and archive all project EHS records throughout mobilisation, construction, installation, and commissioning activities.

Project Closure

  • Finalise project document archiving.
  • Ensure closure of all incident management workflows.

Authority

  • Authority to stop work immediately if unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, or procedural failures are identified that may put people at risk.

Technical Competence

  • Detailed knowledge of Health, Safety, and Environmental legislation relating to major construction projects.
  • Experience implementing EHS arrangements as a Principal Contractor under CDM regulations.

Competence Requirements

Mandatory

  • Diploma (or equivalent) in Health & Safety Management.
  • Diploma (or equivalent) in Environmental Management.
  • CDM Awareness.
  • BESC (Onshore).
  • National Grid Person (Onshore).
  • CCNSG Passport.
  • Accident Investigation Training.
  • Fire Safety.
  • BOSIET (Offshore).
  • Ladder Training (Offshore).
  • IOSH Chartered Membership.

Desirable

  • Lead Auditor OHSAS 18001 / ISO 14001.
  • HSG47.
  • Safety Coaching / Behavioural Safety.
  • First Aid at Work.

Optional

  • SF6 Gas Awareness.

Additional Requirements

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
