Role Overview

Reporting to the Group Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance Manager, the Group Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance Officer is responsible for providing support to the Group’s health, environmental & fire provision, understanding and implementing Group policies, procedures and core documents.

This role is integral to promoting a positive Health and Safety culture and providing practical health and safety support to operational departments.

This is a field-based role requiring frequent daily travel within the defined territory of Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Yorkshire, N.Yorks, Humberside, North Eastern regions. Plus occasional travel to other ETEL group locations nationally as required by the business.

The basic salary range displayed is based upon experience and professional qualifications.

Day to Day

  • Promoting a positive Health, Safety and environmental culture, seeking and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintaining understanding of current regulatory, legislative, related requirements (including the HASAW Act) alongside Group policies, procedures, core documents and the principals involved with Group risk assessments.
  • Implementing updated and/or new policies, procedures, as well as providing practical health and safety support to operational departments.
  • Assisting in maintaining a robust health & safety system.
  • Maintaining the health & safety intranet presence, ensuring procedures, forms and documentation are current.
  • Implementing systems of property and equipment compliance assessment.
  • Review property refurbishment plans and provide Health and Safety advice to Group Property Development Team.
  • Assisting in preparing and sending suitable internal communication for the Group’s operational areas.
  • Understanding the Group’s incident and reporting system, and processing incident reports in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Review incident investigation reports and identify deficiencies within the information and assist operations to identify the root cause of accidents / incidents.
  • Analysing incident data and producing detailed reports identifying trends for internal and external audiences.
  • Reviewing insurance inspection reports and asbestos dashboard data.
  • Induct operational staff regarding the Health & Safety Department and systems.
  • Provide Health and Safety training, when necessary, in collaboration with the Training Team.
  • Liaising with other departments to ensure that all arrangements and activities comply with the Group’s standards.
  • Occasionally deputise for the Group Health and Safety Compliance Manager when required including the supply of information to external enforcement officers and the Primary Authority.
  • Understanding and working in accordance with Departmental procedures.
  • Any other tasks that can be reasonably required.

  • Relevant industry experience with working knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental Regulations within the Automotive and/or Retail Sector is essential.
  • Possess a clear understanding of hazards, risks and controls relating to the automotive industry.
  • Capacity to consistently demonstrate high standards of conduct, performance, integrity and confidentiality.
  • Possess a logical and analytical approach, with excellent attention to detail and a good level of numeracy and IT skills.
  • Confident interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and build positive relationships at all levels.
  • Capable of working under pressure when dealing with multiple competing priorities and challenging deadlines/workload, without sacrificing attention to detail.
  • Team-orientated, the ability to demonstrate resilience and build trust.
  • Demonstrable drive to achieve whilst maintaining a positive, proactive, and professional approach.
  • Capacity and willingness to undertake formal Health & Safety training and qualifications.
  • Desirable Qualifications:
    • NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent.
    • NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety or equivalent.
    • NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management or equivalent.
  • Essential Requirements:
    • Full UK Drivers Licence - Cat B.
