Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
To support the Health, Safety and Environmental function in maintaining a safe, healthy and environmentally responsible workplace.
Administrative duties
- Record keeping
- Carry out inspections, audits
- Training coordination
- Compliance activities
Health and Safety Compliance
- Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of health and safety policies and procedures
- Assist in ensuring company complies with all Environmental and Health & Safety legislation
- Assist in conducting risk assessments and hazard identification across various departments
- Help organise and participate in regular safety meetings and safety training sessions
Environmental Compliance
- Support the development and implementation of environmental policies and procedures to comply with environmental regulations
- Assist in maintaining records of environmental performance, including waste management, emissions, and energy usage
- Collaborate with departments to ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials
Incident Reporting & Investigations
- Maintain records of accidents, near-misses, and incidents
- Assist in the investigation of accidents and incidents to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions
- Track and follow up on corrective actions to ensure they are effectively implemented
Record Keeping & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records for HSE audits, training sessions, certifications, permits, and inspections
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on HSE performance metrics
- Assist in the preparation of documentation for internal and external audits
Training & Awareness
- Coordinate and schedule health, safety, and environmental training programs for employees
- Assist in developing training materials and presentations
- Ensure training records are up-to-date and meet regulatory requirements
Audits & Inspections
- Assist in conducting regular workplace audits and inspections to ensure compliance with HSE standards
- Coordinate corrective actions based on findings from audits and inspections

Communication
- Be the point of contact for HSE inquiries and concerns
- Communicate HSE policies, procedures, and updates to staff at all levels
- Collaborate with external agencies, consultants, and contractors on HSE-related matters
- Identify opportunities for improving health, safety, and environmental performance

Course Contents
- Skilled in the use of multiple IT packages and systems relevant to the organisation in order to:
- Write letters or emails
- Create proposals
- Perform financial processes
- Record and analyse data
- Examples include MS Office or equivalent packages.
- Able to choose the most appropriate IT solution to suit the business problem.
- Able to update and review databases, record information and produce data analysis where required.
- Produces accurate records and documents including: emails, letters, files, payments, reports and proposals.
- Makes recommendations for improvements and present solutions to management.
- Drafts correspondence, writes reports and able to review others' work.
- Maintains records and files, handles confidential information in compliance with the organisation's procedures.
- Coaches others in the processes required to complete these tasks.
- Exercises proactivity and good judgement.
- Makes effective decisions based on sound reasoning and is able to deal with challenges in a mature way.
- Seeks advice of more experienced team members when appropriate.
- Builds and maintains positive relationships within their own team and across the organisation.
- Demonstrates ability to influence and challenge appropriately.
- Becomes a role model to peers and team members, developing coaching skills as they gain area knowledge.
