About the Role
The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving the Safety, Health, Environmental, and Quality (SHEQ) management systems across the Engineering Services business. The role exists to ensure all activities associated with infrastructure projects, mechanical and electrical engineering, construction activities, and operational service delivery are conducted safely, legally, and efficiently.
The post holder will provide strategic leadership and technical expertise to ensure the business maintains the highest standards of health, safety, environmental, and quality performance while achieving operational objectives and maintaining full legal compliance. The role will drive a proactive safety culture that protects employees, contractors, visitors, clients, and the environment.
Responsibilities
- Leading the development and implementation of SHEQ strategies aligned with business objectives.
- Ensuring compliance with all applicable health, safety, environmental, and quality legislation.
- Maintaining certification to ISO 45001, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 management systems.
- Providing technical safety leadership across engineering, maintenance, and infrastructure activities.
- Driving continual improvement in operational safety performance, risk management, and asset integrity.
- Supporting business growth while ensuring safety remains a core operational value.
- Developing and implementing SHEQ improvement plans across all engineering projects.
- Providing competent and practical advice on safety, environmental, and quality matters.
- Leading the management of significant operational and engineering risks.
- Supporting nationwide projects where required.
- Influencing behaviors at all levels of the business to foster a positive safety culture.

Requirements
Essential
- Significant experience in a senior health and safety leadership role within construction, engineering, infrastructure, or industrial operations.
- CDM experience.
- Strong knowledge of operational and engineering risk management.
- Experience implementing and maintaining ISO 45001 management systems.
- Proven experience leading audits, investigations, and improvement programs.
- Experience managing contractors and high-risk activities.
- Strong communication and influencing skills.
- Ability to engage effectively from site level through to executive leadership.
Qualifications
- NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent Level 6 qualification).
- Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH) or working towards chartered status.
- Internal or Lead Auditor qualification.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
