About The Role
We have a unique opportunity to shadow the Trust’s Specialist Advisor for Mental Capacity and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
You will gain valuable experience and learn about the interface between clinical practice and legislation, and where appropriate undertake your own activities, including legal research and the development of training materials.
This role is ideal if you’re interested in pursuing a similar career in the NHS or social care, or if you are a law student seeking practical experience of healthcare law, including the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) and the Human Rights Act 1998.
The current advisor has recently completed the Bar Practice Course and is in the process of applying for pupillage. Currently there are no permanent roles available, so this placement is offered with a view to potential future opportunities.
The opportunity
This is a voluntary shadowing opportunity without pay
- To obtain the best learning experience you will be required to commit to a minimum of 15 days within a 3-month period. The working pattern and exact duration will be discussed at interview
- You must be able to attend Pinderfields Hospital (Wakefield) and Dewsbury and District Hospital
- This role is based within a busy Safeguarding Team and there will be exposure to situations of abuse and/or neglect of adults and children, support will be available for the successful candidate.
For those who are interested, there may be opportunities to explore wider healthcare law and ethics including attendance at the Ethics Committee meeting (subject to agreement from the group), shadowing a mock inquest, and wider exposure to the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended). These are not essential but are available to the successful candidate should they wish to pursue.

Qualifications
Essential person specification requirements
Final year of an undergraduate law degree or has commenced a conversion law degree (e.g. the Graduate Diploma in Law)
Interests And Experience
Those with an interest in pursuing a career as a solicitor, barrister, or within an in-house legal or Safeguarding Team
Some knowledge or experience in healthcare is desirable this may be in a voluntary or personal capacity
Skills
A mature attitude and the ability to maintain confidentiality
DBS
You will be required to complete an enhanced level DBS check prior to commencement of the placement.
