The Role

Are you passionate about delivering exceptional patient care and making a real difference to people's healthcare experience? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Healthcare Support Worker to join our Ophthalmology Service within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, one of the largest and most respected NHS organisations in the UK. Working as part of a dedicated multidisciplinary team, you will play a vital role in supporting patient care across outpatient and inpatient ophthalmology services. This varied and rewarding role offers excellent opportunities for training, development and career progression while contributing to the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care to patients across a range of specialist eye services.

This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for a Certificate of Sponsorship (COS). NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is unable to provide candidates or employees with a Certificate of Sponsorship (COS).

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

  • Part-time, Permanent
  • Location: Inverclyde Royal Hospital
  • Working Pattern: Monday - Friday
  • Salary: Pro Rata for part-time hours

Key Responsibilities

  • Support registered nursing staff and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, high-quality patient care
  • Carry out a range of ophthalmic assessments and diagnostic tests including visual acuity, visual field testing, and OCT scanning following training and competency assessment
  • Assist patients with personal care needs when required, ensuring dignity, compassion, and respect at all times
  • Monitor and report any changes in patients' physical or psychological condition to the appropriate clinical staff
  • Communicate effectively with patients, carers, relatives, and colleagues to support a positive patient experience
  • Maintain accurate patient records and utilise electronic systems in accordance with local policies and procedures
  • Contribute to the smooth running of the department through stock management, equipment checks, and maintaining a safe clinical environment

Knowledge, Training, Qualifications and/or Experience Required

  • Caring and compassionate approach with experience of working in a healthcare or caring environment desirable
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and build positive working relationships
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to engage with a wide range of patients and colleagues
  • Ability to follow clinical protocols and procedures while maintaining a high standard of patient care
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload and use initiative in a busy environment
  • Competent keyboard and IT skills, including experience using Microsoft Office applications
  • Flexible approach to working across different locations and services to meet the needs of the organisation
