The Role and Department

As a Heating Engineer (Gas), you will play a vital role in maintaining the mechanical and gas engineering services that support Durham University's diverse estate. You will undertake a broad range of planned and reactive maintenance, repairs and minor installation works across academic, residential and commercial buildings, helping to ensure essential systems operate safely, efficiently and in compliance with all relevant regulations. Your work will contribute directly to providing a safe, comfortable and reliable environment for staff, students and visitors while supporting the University's teaching, research and wider activities.

As part of the Estates and Facilities Directorate's directly employed maintenance team, you will use your specialist gas engineering knowledge and practical expertise to diagnose faults, resolve technical issues and maintain critical building services infrastructure. You will work collaboratively with colleagues, contractors and customers across the University, delivering a professional and customer-focused service while ensuring the highest standards of safety, compliance and workmanship. You will also contribute to service improvements, support infrastructure projects and help uphold the University's values of commitment to excellence, integrity, collaboration, inclusivity and citizenship.

The Estates and Facilities Directorate provides essential services to Durham University and is responsible for managing, maintaining and developing the infrastructure and building fabric of the various campuses.

What you need to demonstrate when you apply/Person Specification

Your application should cover the following criteria.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications/Experience

  1. Good basic education including GCSEs at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) in English Language and Mathematics, with the ability to communicate effectively and perform routine numerical calculations.
  2. C&G NVQ level 3 Plumbing and Heating or equivalent.
  3. Minimum ACS Commercial gas qualifications COCNI, ICPN1, TPCP 1A.
  4. Minimum ACS Domestic gas qualification CCN1.
  5. Professional craftsperson with knowledge and expertise in buildings and estates services.
  6. Experience of providing advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues.
  7. Experience of implementing policies and procedures.
  8. Full driving licence (with no more than six points).

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

  1. Good spoken and written communication skills including the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.
  2. Strong digital competence across a range of digital devices and apps including digital communication tools, Microsoft 365 applications, business systems.
  3. Regulatory, local and national professional knowledge and experience of compliance.
  4. Industry and regulatory knowledge supported by relevant courses or certifications.
  5. Knowledge and experience of health and safety issues such as risk assessments.
  6. Experience of contributing to the delivery of Mechanical Engineering Services in residential, educational or commercial buildings, estates, services.
  7. Ability to solve problems and decide on and plan appropriate solutions.
  8. Ability to provide support for infrastructure projects e.g. building changes.
  9. Committed to continuing professional development.
  10. Ability to work collaboratively with other team members to ensure the delivery of high-quality services.

Typical Role Requirements

Service Delivery

  • Contribute to equality, diversity and inclusion and the University’s values.

  • Provide specialist advice and make decisions to resolve problems relating to the services you are responsible for.
  • Deliver infrastructure services and projects in collaboration with other staff and sometimes contractors across the University.
  • Perform maintenance of mechanical engineering systems (heating, plumbing, ventilation etc), across the estate, including day-to-day repairs, planned maintenance and minor installation works.
  • Undertake all gas works across the estate, appropriate to the grade and qualifications which may include but not be limited to:
    • Undertake all gas soundness and tightness testing in accordance with IGE/UP/1 & 1a
    • Undertaken installation of gas pipework in accordance IGEM/UP/2
    • Manage and maintain gas safety records of all gas works undertaken and issue certification, where appropriate.
  • Build, test and apply any changes to equipment, facilities, technical and virtual architecture solutions.
  • Manage, maintain and monitor designated equipment, facilities, and systems to ensure safety, security and compliance.
  • Provide the best possible service to staff, students and others who you work with by reviewing and make suggestions to improve the service.
  • Collect, organise and record data and information accurately including asset registers and provide reports and information.
  • Carry out specialist risk assessments and resolve incidents that require relevant expertise.

Planning and Organising

  • Plan and organise your workload to deliver the role.
  • Plan, manage and deliver assigned projects and activities e.g. building works in accordance with agreed objectives.
