Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) and 7.5 tonne Driver role based in Derby. The postholder will safely operate HGVs and 7.5 tonne vehicles to carry out council services, which may include waste and recycling collection, street cleansing, and the transport of materials and equipment. Daily tasks involve planning routes, undertaking vehicle safety checks, loading and unloading items, and completing basic documentation such as delivery notes and service records. The driver will follow all relevant traffic, health and safety, and Council policies, while providing courteous and professional service to residents, colleagues, and partners. The role may also require flexibility in working hours, including occasional early starts, evenings, weekends, or bank holidays to meet service needs.

Qualifications

- Valid Category C (HGV) and/or C1 (7.5 tonne) driving licence, with a clean or low-risk driving record.
- Driver CPC qualification and good knowledge of UK road traffic laws, safety regulations, and highway codes.
- Experience in operating heavy goods vehicles in urban environments and carrying out daily vehicle safety inspections.
- Ability to safely load, secure, and unload goods or equipment, including manual handling in line with health and safety guidance.
- Strong reliability, time-management, and route-planning skills to meet service schedules and deadlines.
- Good communication and teamwork skills to work effectively with supervisors, crew members, and members of the public.
- Commitment to providing a high-quality customer experience and representing Derby City Council in a professional manner.
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills for completing logs, reports, and service records; prior local authority or public sector experience is an advantage.
