We also provide maintenance services to a growing range of external public sector and private sector customers.
We are looking for a skilled and motivated Heavy Vehicle Mechanic to join our professional workshop team. You will carry out a wide variety of servicing, inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance across a diverse fleet of heavy and light vehicles, plant, and equipment. No two days are the same, offering the opportunity to broaden your skills and work on a unique range of assets.
If you take pride in delivering high-quality workmanship and want to be part of a team that keeps vital council services operating safely and efficiently, we'd love to hear from you.
Why Join Fleetcare?
This is an opportunity to join one of the most diverse and well-equipped fleet maintenance operations in the region. Our workshop maintains a wide range of vehicles and equipment, from HGVs, specialist winter maintenance vehicles, and construction plant through to vans, cars, and other specialist assets that support essential public services across Staffordshire.
Working for Staffordshire County Council means more than just repairing vehicles. Every day, your skills and expertise will help keep vital services running, supporting highways operations, winter gritting, libraries, passenger transport, social care, and many other services relied upon by residents and communities across the county.
Main Responsibilities
You will be:
- Carrying out major repairs, servicing, inspections, and preventative maintenance across a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment, including HGVs, cars, vans, specialist municipal vehicles, highways equipment, and contractors' plant. This will include fault diagnosis, advanced diagnostic testing, and MOT testing to ensure vehicles remain safe, compliant, and operational.
- Preparing vehicles and equipment to the highest standard for annual MOT, plating, and statutory inspections, including presenting vehicles at authorized test facilities and resolving any defects identified during the testing process.
- Diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing a wide range of vehicle systems, including electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical components, together with tail lifts, ancillary equipment, air conditioning systems, and specialist fleet assets.
- Supporting Staffordshire County Council's Winter Maintenance Service through participation in the Snowflake operation, ensuring gritting vehicles and associated equipment remain available during severe weather events. This includes taking part in the winter maintenance "Stand To" rota and contributing to the delivery of a 24-hour vehicle breakdown and emergency response service for key council operations and customers.
- Maintaining accurate service, inspection, and repair records, ensuring all work is completed in accordance with legislative requirements, industry best practice, and Fleetcare quality standards.
- Working closely with colleagues and customers to help keep essential frontline services operating safely and efficiently across Staffordshire.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
