HGV Technician Apprenticeship

ADM Milling Ltd, Avonmouth (BS11 9DL), offers a 3-year HGV Technician Apprenticeship combining college study with hands-on training. Apprentices gain a Level 3 qualification, practical experience, mentoring from skilled staff, and develop ADM’s values and competencies to support a long-term career within the company.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Particular areas of responsibility will be to:

  • Attend all training days, ensuring all assignments and exams are completed within agreed timescales to a satisfactory standard
  • To assist in routine maintenance and repairs on all makes of vehicles and trailers using appropriate equipment and tools in a safe and economical manner
  • To assist in diagnosing and rectifying all types of faults
  • Assist in ensuring all company vehicles are handled with care and all reasonable steps are taken to return the vehicle in a clean and tidy condition on completion of work undertaken
  • Ensure all aspects of Health and Safety regulations and safe working practices are adhered to, including the mandatory wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) and machine guarding
  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and tidiness in all areas of the business in order to maintain the company image and a safe working environment
  • Maintain high levels of attendance and conduct at all times

Apprentices should be able to demonstrate:

  • Good verbal & written communication skills
  • Flexibility to undertake a wide range of tasks
  • Awareness and understanding of health and safety requirements

Heavy vehicle service and maintenance technician (level 3)

What you'll learn

Course contents

  • Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
  • The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
  • Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
  • The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
  • Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
  • Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
  • Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
  • Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
  • Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
  • To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.

You will be studying Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Level 3 Apprenticeship with City of Bristol College. The College delivery will start in late September and will be delivered as block release (2 weeks in College, 5 times a year).
