An exciting role to work under the direction of the Maintenance Manager
To ensure that all vehicle maintenance and MOT duties are carried out promptly, efficiently, and in accordance with manufacturer's guidance and the applicable health and safety rules, the apprentice will assist qualified staff with all servicing and MOT work.
What you'll do at work
- Assist with undertaking the maintenance and repair of all fleet vehicles
- Ensuring that documentation regarding the MOT preparation, servicing, and repair of vehicles conforms to ‘O’ Licence requirements and is accurately completed
- Maintaining an ongoing visual assessment of any vehicles which are serviced or repaired by external providers, to ensure that the highest standards are provided by any third party and that they are adhering to all legal requirements
- Report any workshop equipment defects
- Comply with relevant legalisation

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
- The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry
- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes
- Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately
- The ability to service, inspect, and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards
- Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s
- Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual
- Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision
- Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes
- Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation
- To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection, and diagnosing techniques

Training schedule
The apprenticeship programme usually consists of the following elements:
Knowledge element:
This is the technical certificate and covers the theory side of your work which is delivered when you attend college, so that you can put these newly acquired skills into practice at work
Competence element:
This is the practical side of the programme and is assessed directly within the workplace by a Harlow College Assessor to ensure that you are developing your skills within the workplace and putting all that you learn at college into practice
Functional skills:
This area covers English, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) if not already at Grade 4 GCSE standard
Transferable skills:
- These are the skills that help you develop your Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) and your rights as an employee within the workplace (ERR)
- The duration of the course is 36 months
- You will attend college for 1 day a week, and you will be in the workplace for the remaining 4 days
How and when will I study?
- IMI NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
- Level 2 Functional Skills - English (if required) and Level 2 IT (if required)
- ERR (Employment Rights and Responsibilities)
- PLTS (Personal Learning and Thinking Skills)

Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade Grade 4 or equivalent)
- Maths (grade Grade 4 or equivalent)
Desirable qualifications
GCSE in:
- ICT (grade 4)
Other in:
- Valid UK Driving License (grade Car)

Other requirements
Should the applicant not have a valid car grade driving licence and transport, Fiveways would arrange transport for the one day per week at Harlow College.
About this employer
Fiveways is an established family run business specialising in the hire of and rental of commercial vehicles in the waste industry in London, Essex, Kent, and across the UK. Our vehicle maintenance facility includes an MOT test lane for LGV vehicle and a separate MOT test lane for vehicles up to 7.5t. We have over 400 vehicles available on our fleet ranging from 32t waste collection vehicles, mechanical sweepers, 3.5t cage vehicles, and other specialist vehicles.
