Summary
An exciting role to work under the direction of the Maintenance Manager to ensure that all vehicle maintenance and MOT duties are carried out promptly, efficiently and in accordance with manufacturer's guidance and the applicable health and safety rules. The apprentice will assist qualified staff with all servicing and MOT work.
Wage: £18,000 a year
Training course: Heavy vehicle service and maintenance technician (level 3)
Hours: Monday - Friday, 7.00am - 4.00pm. 40 hours a week
Start date: Monday 1 February 2027
Duration: 3 years

Work
What you'll do at work
- Assist with undertaking the maintenance and repair of all fleet vehicles
- Ensuring that documentation regarding the MOT preparation, servicing and repair of vehicles conforms to ‘O’ Licence requirements and is accurately completed
- Maintaining an ongoing visual assessment of any vehicles which are serviced or repaired by external providers, to ensure that the highest standards are provided by any third party and that they are adhering to all legal requirements
- Report any workshop equipment defects
- Comply with relevant legalisation

Course contents
- Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
- The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
- Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
- The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
- Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
- Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
- Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
- Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
- Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
- To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.

Training schedule
- Knowledge element: Technical certificate covering the theory side of your work delivered at college.
- Competence element: Practical side of the programme assessed within the workplace by a Harlow College Assessor.
- Functional skills: English and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) if not already at Grade 4 GCSE standard.
- Transferable skills: Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) and Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR).
Duration: 36 months
College attendance: 1 day a week
Workplace attendance: 4 days a week

- Level 2 Functional Skills - English (if required) and Level 2 IT (if required)

Requirements
Essential qualifications
- GCSE in: English (grade Grade 4 or equivalent)
- GCSE in: Maths (grade Grade 4 or equivalent)
- BTEC in: Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance (grade Pass)
- NVQ or Equivalent Type in: Heavy Vehicle (HGV) (grade Pass)

Other requirements
Should the applicant not have a valid car grade driving licence and transport, Fiveways would arrange transport for the one day per week at Harlow College.

Fiveways is an established family run business specialising in the hire of and rental of commercial vehicles in the waste industry in London, Essex, Kent and across the UK. Our vehicle maintenance facility includes an MOT test lane for LGV vehicle and a separate MOT test lane for vehicles up to 7.5t. We have over 400 vehicles available on our fleet ranging from 32t waste collection vehicles, mechanical sweepers, 3.5t cage vehicles and other specialist vehicles.
