Octavius Finance Hedge Fund Allocator Opportunity

Octavius Finance has been mandated by a highly regarded hedge fund with a strong fundamental investment culture and a track record of generating alpha through differentiated, bottom-up research.

The firm is looking to hire an Allocator to join its investment team, with a specific mandate to identify, assess and monitor fundamental long/short equity managers and strategies.

This is an attractive opportunity for an investor who enjoys going beyond headline performance and developing a deep understanding of how managers generate alpha. The role will involve significant autonomy in sourcing and performing diligence on managers, analysing their investment processes and portfolios, and assessing the sustainability and repeatability of their returns.

This role sits within the firm’s investment team, and is not a business development seat. The successful candidate will report directly to the group CEO, and will take direct ownership of the firm’s strategic allocation mandate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and source high-quality fundamental long/short equity managers across global markets and sectors.
  • Conduct detailed investment due diligence across prospective and existing managers, including analysis of:
    • Investment philosophy and process
    • Portfolio construction
    • Security selection and idea generation
    • Risk management
    • Position sizing and portfolio exposures
    • Historical performance and attribution
  • Assess the quality, persistence and scalability of manager alpha.
  • Develop a detailed understanding of individual investment theses and how managers differentiate themselves from their peers.
  • Analyse portfolio holdings and independently assess the fundamental drivers behind performance.
  • Monitor existing allocations, identifying changes in process, team, risk profile or performance that may impact the investment case.
  • Maintain relationships with external investment managers and develop a strong network across the fundamental L/S equity universe.
  • Prepare investment recommendations and present findings to senior investment decision-makers.
  • Contribute to broader portfolio construction and capital allocation discussions.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

We would particularly like to speak with candidates who have experience in:

  • Hedge fund manager selection / fund-of-funds investing
  • Institutional allocator roles with meaningful L/S equity coverage
  • Manager research or investment due diligence
  • Fundamental equity research with exposure to hedge fund strategies
  • Portfolio construction and external manager allocation

The successful candidate will combine strong fundamental investment judgement with genuine intellectual curiosity. They should be comfortable going deep into a manager's portfolio, challenging investment theses and forming an independent view rather than relying solely on quantitative performance metrics.

Strong communication skills are important, as the role requires regular interaction with portfolio managers, analysts and senior investment professionals.
