Job Overview
Hepatology Specialist Nurse – Band 6
Frimley Park Hospital
1 year secondment or fixed term contract
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our dedicated Hepatology team as a Band 6 Specialist Nurse. You will provide high-quality, patient-centred care to people living with a range of liver conditions, supporting assessment, treatment, education, follow-up, and care coordination.
A key focus of this role will be the identification, assessment, and management of patients with blood-borne viruses (BBVs), particularly hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV), and supporting the delivery of the NHS England BBV opt-out testing programme.
Working closely with the Emergency Department, you will monitor positive BBV results and ensure newly diagnosed patients receive timely assessment, investigation, treatment, and appropriate onward referral. You will also support patients identified through inpatient and other clinical pathways.
You will contribute to the delivery of nurse-led clinics and telephone follow-up clinics, undertaking specialist clinical assessments and interventions within agreed protocols and pathways. The role also includes supporting patients with chronic liver disease and those requiring ongoing surveillance, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance where appropriate.
You will be trained to undertake FibroScan and, on completion of the required competencies, may develop and deliver independent FibroScan clinics.
If you are an enthusiastic, compassionate nurse looking to develop your specialist skills and make a meaningful difference to patients with liver disease, we would love to hear from you.
Main duties of the job
- To provide specialist nursing care to patients with liver disease, with a particular focus on BBV testing, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.
- To support the planned opt-out BBV testing programme, monitoring positive results and ensuring that newly diagnosed patients are appropriately assessed, investigated, treated, and referred.
- To monitor and contact newly diagnosed inpatients and other patients identified through BBV testing pathways.
- To establish/maintain patient-centred access, assessment, treatment, follow-up within the parameters, pathways, and protocols set by the Hepatology team.
- To support the testing and health promotion of people at risk of contracting hepatitis B and hepatitis C.
- To contribute to the delivery of nurse-led clinics and telephone follow-up clinics.
- To undertake clinical assessments and support the treatment of a designated caseload of patients, through timely and appropriate access to specialist nursing support.
- To support patients with chronic liver disease through appropriate surveillance, investigation, and follow-up, including HCC surveillance where indicated.
- To work closely with the Hepatology medical and nursing teams and the wider multidisciplinary team to provide symptom management, treatment support, surveillance, health promotion, and patient education.
- To act as a positive role model and specialist resource.
- To contribute to the development and delivery of a consistent, high-quality specialist nursing service for patients with liver disease.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
