About Flannery Plant Hire
Flannery Plant Hire is one of the UK's leading providers of operated and self-drive plant equipment, supporting major infrastructure and construction projects nationwide. We invest in people, technology and innovation to build the workforce of the future.
Role Summary
We are seeking an HGV Cover Driver to join our transport team on a flexible, on-call basis to cover planned and unplanned absences for our heavy goods vehicle drivers. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and timely movement of plant, materials and accessories between depots and customer sites, providing a professional customer-facing service while ensuring compliance with company health & safety and transport procedures.
This role requires HGV driving competence, good time management, adaptability and a practical approach to loading and unloading duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate company HGVs (category C/CE as required) to deliver and collect plant, attachments and materials across assigned regions, including multi-drop and back-to-base journeys.
- Ensure safe loading, securing and unloading of equipment using appropriate restraints, ramps, tail lifts and lifting aids; verify loads are roadworthy before departure.
- Complete driver paperwork, electronic job sheets, checklists and vehicle records accurately and submit promptly to the transport planner or depot.
- Carry out pre-start and post-shift vehicle inspections, report defects through the correct channels, and ensure vehicles are kept clean, fuelled and ready for use.
- Liaise professionally with customers, site contacts, depot colleagues and the transport office to confirm delivery windows, site access and special instructions.
- Comply with site inductions and customer safety protocols, identify and report hazards, and follow Flannery’s health & safety and driving procedures at all times.
- Assist with basic vehicle and plant handling tasks on site, where safe to do so, including wheel-chocking and supervised use of lifting equipment.
- Report incidents, near misses or damage promptly and complete required documentation in accordance with company procedures.
- Provide cover for rota gaps, supporting depot activities during quieter periods such as stock checks, cleaning and basic workshop assistance as directed.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by providing feedback on routes, vehicle utilisation and customer interactions to the transport supervisor.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
