About the Role
We’re looking for an experienced HGV & Plant Operator to join our Construction Operations team at Wessex Internet.
This is a hands-on role where you’ll play an important part in keeping our construction operations moving. You’ll be responsible for safely transporting plant, machinery, equipment, and materials between our operational sites, as well as operating construction plant when required.
Working closely with our Foremen, Build Managers, Network Delivery, and Construction teams, you’ll make sure the right equipment gets to the right place, safely and on time.
You’ll also have an important role in looking after our fleet and equipment, carrying out daily checks, identifying defects, and helping us maintain high standards of safety and fleet care.

What you’ll be doing as an HGV & Plant Operator
- Safely transport, load, and unload HGVs, plant, machinery, materials, and equipment across operational sites.
- Complete daily vehicle inspections and Fleetcheck checks, identifying and reporting any defects, damage, or maintenance requirements.
- Operate construction plant and machinery when required and within your relevant qualifications and competencies.
- Work closely with Foremen, Build Managers, and the wider Construction team to ensure equipment and materials are where they need to be, when they’re needed.
- Maintain high standards of vehicle, plant, and equipment care, ensuring loads are secured and all work is carried out safely and in line with legislation and company procedures.
- Support the wider fleet and workshop operation where required, including vehicle movements, breakdowns, and other reasonable duties.
- Represent Wessex Internet professionally when travelling to and working across operational sites.
- Support the Workshop with vehicle movements, breakdowns, and other duties when required.

What we’re looking for from our next HGV & Plant Operator
- Current and valid Category CE (Class 1) HGV licence with at least 2 years’ HGV driving experience.
- Experience operating construction plant and machinery, ideally within a groundworks or construction environment.
- Good understanding of vehicle, plant, and machinery safety, including load security and basic fault identification.
- A reliable, safety-conscious, and proactive approach to work.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a wider team, managing tasks effectively and responding to operational issues.
- Good communication skills and a professional approach when working with colleagues, contractors, and customers.
Desirable:
- Lorry Loader/HIAB, LOLER, plant operator, or other relevant construction and machinery qualifications.
