We are seeking an experienced, innovative, and highly motivated Highly Specialist Adult Diabetes Nurse (Clinical Lead) Band 8a to join our Diabetes Service on a 9-month secondment. This is an exciting opportunity for an expert diabetes practitioner to provide clinical leadership and specialist support, driving excellence in diabetes care across the service.
The post holder will work autonomously to assess, diagnose, and manage patients with complex diabetes needs, delivering high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centred care. As the clinical lead for the service, you will provide expert advice and support to colleagues across the multidisciplinary team, promoting best practice, service development, and improved patient outcomes.
Working closely with key stakeholders, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and developing diabetes services, contributing to education, quality improvement, and the implementation of innovative models of care. The role combines advanced clinical practice, leadership, service development, and staff education to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and responsive diabetes care for our population.
Main duties of the job
- Deliver advanced assessment, diagnosis and treatment for patients with diabetes.
- Provide expert clinical decision-making and specialist advice to the multidisciplinary team.
- Lead service improvement, quality improvement, audit and research activities.
- Develop and deliver education and training for healthcare professionals.
- Contribute to the operational and strategic development of the diabetes service.
- Work collaboratively across organisational and system boundaries to improve patient care.

🎓 Education & Qualifications
Essential Criteria:
- Current NMC registration or other relevant registered professional qualification (HCPC/GPhC as applicable).
- MSc in the relevant specialism, an equivalent Level 7 qualification, or completion of the NHSE e-Portfolio Route.
- Evidence of ongoing advanced clinical professional development within diabetes care.
- Non-Medical Prescribing qualification with relevant prescribing experience.
- A professional portfolio demonstrating continued learning, reflection and development within your specialist area.
Desirable:
- Recognised teaching qualification.
- Recognised leadership or management qualification.
🩺 Experience
Essential Criteria:
- Significant specialist clinical experience working within adult diabetes care.
- Extensive experience assessing and managing patients with complex and undifferentiated health needs, including requesting/interpreting investigations and developing appropriate care plans.
- Experience managing clinical complexity within diabetes and making autonomous clinical decisions.
- Experience of leadership, service transformation, quality improvement or service development.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, teaching and assessing clinical colleagues.
- Experience assessing individual and team competencies, capabilities and learning needs, and developing appropriate training.
- Experience supporting recruitment, retention and staff performance.
- Experience applying research, audit and evidence-based practice to improve patient care and service delivery.

- Advanced clinical skills in assessment, diagnosis, clinical reasoning and decision-making.
- Strong specialist knowledge of diabetes management, including the management of complex patients.
- Proven leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to support and develop multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong quality improvement and change-management skills, with experience contributing to service improvement.
- Ability to critically appraise research and clinical evidence and translate findings into practice.
- Knowledge and experience of clinical audit, research processes and implementing recommendations.
- In-depth understanding of clinical governance, patient safety and quality standards.
- Excellent communication, teaching, mentoring and multidisciplinary working skills.
- Strong digital/IT skills and the ability to use clinical systems effectively.
- Non-Medical Prescribing skills and experience relevant to the specialist diabetes role.
