Job Overview

We are delighted to offer an excellent opportunity for a highly specialist Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist to lead our inpatient general medical team.

This is a dynamic post for an experienced and dedicated Speech and Language Therapist. The successful candidate will lead our general medical service and deliver a highly specialist intervention for adults with acquired swallowing and communication needs.

As a highly specialist adult speech and language therapist, you will:

  • Lead & Inspire: Lead on the professional and clinical direction of the Broomfield Hospital Adult SLT Acute Inpatient Service making full use of Provide’s culture of innovation and commitment to excellence.
  • Manage & Develop: Contribute to the professional development of junior colleagues supporting team growth, and help to shape a thriving, motivated workforce.
  • Deliver Excellence: Help to ensure that services are implemented safely, effectively, and efficiently within an agreed locality, making a tangible difference to the lives of those we serve.
  • Collaborate & Innovate: Work within multidisciplinary teams and across organizational boundaries with Provide and MSEFT to enhance and streamline service delivery.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as a member of the Broomfield Hospital Adult Speech and Language Therapy Team in the provision of a highly specialist service to adults across acute inpatient wards.
  • To contribute to the delivery of instrumental assessment including videofluoroscopy and FEES and to provide cover for other clinicians as required.
  • In line with requirements of other Band 7s on site, to deputise for the Operational Lead in respect of operational management of the service as required.
  • Supervise and develop junior members of the team within the service.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Professional Registration with the HCPC
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Evidence of continuing CPD

Desirable criteria

  • Master’s degree or equivalent ability in relevant field

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience in the independent assessment and management of complex acquired communication and swallowing disorders with adult populations within a variety of settings (including acute inpatients and critical care)
  • Experience of managing and leading a team including providing supervision, guidance, and completion of probation and/or appraisals.
  • Experience in identification of service gaps/ issues and implementation of sustainable Quality Improvement and service development initiatives.
  • In-depth knowledge of a broad range of assessment and intervention tools relevant to complex communication and swallowing difficulties, underpinned by national policies and guidelines relevant to the area of critical care, older people and general medicine
  • In-depth knowledge of the principles of clinical governance to inform escalation of service issues and risks
  • Experience of MDT working
  • Experience of providing training to professionals

Desirable criteria

  • Experience with supporting staff through performance and/or sickness management utilising Trust policies.
  • Knowledge of neurorehabilitation pathways and referral processes
  • Completion of Leadership training

Skills

Essential criteria

  • Demonstrates competence in the facilitation, interpretation and reporting of videofluoroscopy.
  • Ability to independently manage non-ventilated patients with tracheostomies from insertion to decannulation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills utilising observation, active listening and empathy, in order to build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders (within SLT, wider MDT, patients and families)
  • Demonstrates good organisational skills with the ability to effectively plan, prioritise, and manage clinical and non-clinical responsibilities, ensuring deadlines are met and high standards of service delivery are maintained
  • Ability to multitask in a busy, fast-paced environment showing flexibility to changes in service needs and priorities, and the ability to trouble-shoot complex clinical and operational team issues as/when they arise
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 to support documentation, communication and admin tasks

Desirable criteria

  • Experience leading in videofluoroscopy clinics
  • Competence in the facilitation, interpretation and reporting of FEES
