About the Role
The post holder will be responsible for leading the Speech and Language Therapy Service across Hampshire, covering both forensic inpatient services and the Forensic Community Learning Disability Team. The scope of the service has been extended over recent years where additional funding has allowed provision to be offered into all 3 of our inpatient forensic units. As a result this role has provided oversight to the junior SLT based within the Learning Disability forensic services, whilst directly covering the mental health wards.
The post holder will however be required to assign responsibilities according to SLT team skill mix and service demands. They will take a clinical role in the assessment and treatment of complex patients presenting with communication disorders and dysphagia needs. Patients will have an underlying Learning Disability or Mental Health condition which has been instrumental in them engaging in behaviours that resulted in contact, or placing them at high risk of contact, with the Criminal Justice System.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Oversight: Lead the Speech and Language Therapy Service across Hampshire, covering both forensic inpatient services and the Forensic Community Learning Disability Team.

Service Development: Provide oversight to the junior SLT based within the Learning Disability forensic services, whilst directly covering the mental health wards.

Clinical Role: Take a clinical role in the assessment and treatment of complex patients presenting with communication disorders and dysphagia needs.

Collaboration: Work closely with other professional leads, members of the MDT, senior management, and outside agencies to provide advice, training, and education to support the dysphagia and communication needs of the clients.

Service Development: Be responsible for the development of the speech and language therapy service.

Formulation: Contribute to a holistic formulation of the service users' presentation, by applying their own clinical expertise alongside the other professionals involved.

Intervention: Ensure intervention is collaborative with the service users and functional in nature.

Supervision: Supervise junior Speech and Language Therapists, assistants, and students as appropriate.
