Senior / Principal Highway Engineer
Gloucester, Gloucestershire (Hybrid)
Permanent or Contract
Job Description
Fancy shaping the roads, junctions and active travel routes that an entire county will use for the next generation?
We're working with a leading multi-disciplinary consultancy who are growing their Local Government team in Gloucester, and they're after two great engineers to join them: a Senior Highway Engineer and a Principal (or Associate) Highway Engineer. Same team, same exciting pipeline of work, just a different level of experience and leadership on offer, so whichever stage of your career you're at, there's a seat at the table.
This isn't a "keep the lights on" role. There's a genuinely ambitious, multi-year programme of highways, bridges and infrastructure projects lined up across the county, so you'll be getting your teeth into meaty, varied work rather than ticking over on small jobs. And if you're not looking for a permanent move right now, good news: this can be offered on a contract basis too, for anyone who prefers that route.
Key Responsibilities
Both roles will get stuck into:
- Developing highway designs on multi-disciplinary projects, from concept through to delivery.
- Keeping projects on programme, on budget, and squarely within technical standards and legal requirements.
- Supporting Project Managers with planning, technical input, pricing of project briefs, proposals and cost estimation.
- Preparing, checking and reviewing design documentation, drawings, reports and technical submissions.
- Juggling a varied portfolio of multi-disciplinary projects at any one time (in the good way).
- Coordinating engineering and technician resources to get work packages delivered.
- Working closely with clients, stakeholders and internal teams to keep everyone rowing in the same direction.
- Getting out on site now and then to support supervision and check contractor compliance.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
