About The Role
Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Highways Maintenance Operative to join our UKCS Scotland team, working on our M77 contract.
In this role, you’ll help maintain roads across East Renfrewshire, East Ayrshire, and South Lanarkshire. You’ll support the safe and reliable operation of the local road network by carrying out planned maintenance, winter operations, and emergency response activities.
The role involves participating in a shift system, winter standby rota, and rostered emergency response arrangements. Flexibility to work overtime and varied shift patterns will therefore be required to meet the needs of the contract.
What you'll be doing
Responsibilities
As a Highways Maintenance Operative, Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Delivering winter maintenance operations, including participation in the shift system and winter standby rota
- Setting up and managing traffic management arrangements
- Participating in emergency response activities on a rostered basis
- Carrying out civil maintenance works, including carriageway patching and drainage and fencing repairs
- Completing cyclical maintenance activities, such as sign cleaning, gully cleaning, and grass cutting
- Working safely and following relevant health and safety procedures and standards
- Taking pride in the quality of your work and supporting the wider team in maintaining the road network
Requirements
You Will Need
- A valid driving licence
- A Class 1 or Class 2 LGV licence
- A safety-first approach to everything you do
- Pride in delivering work to a high standard
- An honest and dependable approach, with the ability to act with integrity
- Flexibility to work overtime, shifts, and standby arrangements in line with operational requirements
Previous Experience In Highways Maintenance, Groundworks, Or Construction Would Be Beneficial. It Would Also Be Advantageous If You Hold, Or Are Working Towards, Any Of The Following

- Driver CPC qualification
- NHSS 12AB traffic management accreditation or experience
- Winter maintenance experience
- NRSWA training
- CSCS Highway Maintenance certification
- NVQ in Winter Service
- CPCS Telescopic Telehandler certification
- First Aid qualification
