Highways Maintenance Operative - Area 10 Strategic Highways
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Highways Maintenance Operative to join our Area 10 Strategic Highways team based in Preston Brook, Runcorn.
As a Highways Maintenance Operative, you will play a vital role in maintaining and improving the strategic road network, helping to ensure roads remain safe and operational for road users. You will support a wide range of highway maintenance activities, including temporary traffic management installation, routine maintenance works, winter services, and emergency response operations.
Working Pattern
- Average of 42 hours per week
- 12-hour shifts
- Rotating 4-on, 4-off days and nights pattern
- Participation in winter maintenance and emergency standby/call-out duties
What You'll Be Doing
Key responsibilities will include:
- Carrying out routine and cyclic highway maintenance activities.
- Supporting minor civil engineering works and general highway upkeep.
- Installing and removing temporary traffic management systems.
- Undertaking winter maintenance operations and emergency response duties.
- Driving and operating vehicles and plant equipment, including completion of daily vehicle checks and basic maintenance tasks.
- Completing litter picking and environmental maintenance activities across the network.
- Recording driver hours and accurately completing defect reporting documentation.
- Capturing time and resource utilisation through company allocation systems.
- Attending work briefings and maintaining high technical and operational standards.
- Communicating effectively with colleagues, subcontractors, clients, emergency services, police, and members of the public.
- Taking responsibility for your own safety and that of others, ensuring full compliance with health, safety, and environmental requirements.

What We're Looking For
We would love to hear from you if you have:
Essential
- LGV Class C Licence
- Driver CPC qualification with 35 hours completed
- Appropriate CSCS Card
- Personal Highways Passport
- Manual Handling certification
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Self-motivated and proactive approach
- Excellent communication skills
- Commitment to health, safety, and quality standards
