Your New Role

As Highways Supervisor, you will be responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient delivery of highways maintenance and improvement works. You will supervise operational teams and subcontractors, ensuring works are completed safely, on programme and to the required quality standards. This role requires strong leadership skills, a proactive approach to health and safety and the ability to coordinate multiple activities across a live highways environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise highways maintenance, improvement and reactive works activities.
  • Lead direct labour and subcontract teams on site.
  • Deliver daily briefings, toolbox talks and safety inspections.
  • Ensure compliance with HSEQ requirements, CDM regulations and client standards.
  • Manage traffic management operations and site access arrangements.
  • Monitor productivity, quality and programme performance.
  • Identify and escalate operational, safety and programme risks.
  • Complete site records, inspections, permits and quality documentation.
  • Liaise with stakeholders, local authorities and operational management teams.
  • Coordinate labour, plant and material resources.
  • Support emergency response and out-of-hours works when required.
  • Drive continuous improvement across operational activities.

What You'll Need to Succeed

  • Previous experience supervising highways maintenance or civil engineering works.
  • Strong understanding of highways operations and traffic management.
  • NRSWA Supervisor accreditation.
  • SMSTS or SSSTS certification.
  • CSCS card.
  • Experience managing site teams and subcontractors.
  • Good knowledge of health, safety and environmental legislation.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications and work instructions.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable

  • Experience on trunk road or local authority highways contracts.
  • Winter maintenance operations.
  • Resurfacing, drainage, structures or bridge maintenance schemes.
  • NEBOSH qualification.
  • First Aid certification.
