About the role:
Our Highways team aims to provide a high quality road network for the region. By ensuring our highways are safe for the public, we help make Central Bedfordshire a great place to work and live. As a Highways Technician, you’ll make a big contribution. You will liaise with town and parish councils, local councillors, assess highway issues and raise task orders for repairs. Identifying and delivering improvement works for the area will also be key. Give local people an outstanding highway network to enable you to find your greatness.
Across Central Bedfordshire, thousands of residents, businesses and visitors use our roads every day. You’ll make sure they get a good experience, whether they’re walking, driving or cycling. The first step is to be responsible for what is happening on the highway network in your area. You’ll be the primary point of contact for elected members and town and parish councils for your area. You will assist the Highway Maintenance Manager with the management of the Council’s highway asset to ensure that the resources available are used to maintain the asset in the optimum way. To make sure we’re working efficiently, you’ll monitor the performance of highway contract procedures and check they comply with rules.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
