An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Cellular Pathologist with a specialist interest in Skin/Dermatopathology to join a friendly, forward-thinking and supportive Histopathology Department in the West Midlands.

Duties

This is a substantive Consultant appointment, with full-time or part-time working options available. The successful candidate will join an expanding team of consultants and contribute to the delivery and continued development of a comprehensive histopathology and non-gynaecological cytopathology service.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide comprehensive histopathology and non-gynaecological cytopathology services.
  • Report a broad range of surgical pathology specimens, with opportunities to develop and lead a specialist interest in Skin/Dermatopathology.
  • Participate in appropriate multidisciplinary team meetings, particularly within areas of specialist interest.
  • Contribute to clinical audit, clinical governance and quality improvement.
  • Participate in local, regional and national External Quality Assurance (EQA) schemes where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of pathology services in line with clinical and technical advances.
  • Participate in teaching of junior medical staff, medical students and laboratory staff.
  • Contribute to departmental research and development activities.
  • Undertake appropriate managerial and administrative responsibilities.
  • Participate in the continuing development of the Cellular Pathology service.

Digital Pathology & Facilities

The department is the lead laboratory within a developing digital pathology network, enabling cases to be shared digitally across the network and making greater use of specialist reporting expertise.

The Successful Candidate Will Have Access To

  • Modern digital pathology facilities.
  • A personal laptop and docking station.
  • Additional clinical-grade reporting screens.
  • Facilities for digital reporting from home.
  • A dedicated office and modern reporting equipment.
  • Strong biomedical scientist and clerical support.

Skin/Dermatopathology Opportunity

The department specifically welcomes applicants with an interest in Skin Pathology. The person specification identifies Lead for Skin Pathology as one of the specialist leadership opportunities within the expanding consultant team.

This provides an excellent opportunity for a Consultant who wants to develop or take a leadership role in dermatopathology while maintaining a broad general Cellular Pathology practice.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

  • Full and Specialist Registration with the GMC, with a current licence to practise, or eligibility for Specialist Registration within six months of interview.
  • UK-trained applicants must hold a CCT or be within 6 months of obtaining one at the time of the interview.
  • Non-UK-trained applicants must provide evidence of equivalence to UK CCT.
  • FRCPath, or evidence of equivalent training and experience.
  • Appropriate training in Histopathology and diagnostic cytology.
  • Appropriate experience and skills across Cellular Pathology suitable for a DGH service.
  • Experience in surgical histopathology, particularly breast and/or skin pathology.
  • Experience in non-gynaecological cytology, including reporting fine needle aspirates.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable

  • Management training and/or experience.
  • Experience in Skin Pathology leadership.
  • Experience in Breast Pathology and screening.
  • Participation in autopsy services.
  • Leadership and service-development experience.
  • Ability to motivate and develop departmental staff.
  • Strategic planning and sound judgement when managing competing pressures.
