Overview of the role Archive Mole, founded in 2020, provides historical research and document-copying services to academics, students, organisations, and private clients around the world.
We are seeking experienced researchers to undertake remote historical and archival research. Assignments will cover varied subjects, periods, places, and types of enquiry, including family, military, political, social, local, and institutional history.
The role is entirely remote and requires no travel. You will be free to accept or decline assignments according to your availability. Work can be completed at times that suit you, subject to agreed deadlines.
Core duties
- Search online catalogues maintained by archives, libraries, museums, universities, and other repositories
- Identify potentially relevant records, collections, and repositories
- Investigate names, places, organisations, and events using spelling variants and alternative search strategies
- Conduct research using digitised primary sources, such as newspapers and other reliable online resources
- Compile prioritised lists of potentially relevant records
- Produce clear research plans for subsequent archive visits
- Record full catalogue references and explain why particular records may be relevant
- Prepare concise summaries of findings for clients
- Work within agreed time limits and alert the Lead Researcher when an enquiry is likely to require additional work

Experience, skills and requirements
Essential
- A PhD in history or a closely related discipline, or current enrolment on a doctoral programme
- Demonstrable expertise in searching online archive catalogues, navigating hierarchical catalogue structures, and identifying relevant records
- Ability to develop effective searches using variant names, spellings, dates, places, and historical terminology
- Ability to research unfamiliar subjects, assess the evidential value of sources, and distinguish evidence from inference
- Excellent written English, attention to detail, and accurate referencing
- Ability to work independently, efficiently, and within specified time limits and deadlines
- Strong organisational and communication skills
- Reliable internet access and access to a suitable computer
- The right to work in the UK

Desirable
- Professional experience of undertaking paid archival or historical research
- Experience of family-history or genealogical research
Training in Archive Mole's procedures and research standards will be provided. All required training is mandatory.
Job Type Flexible, assignment-based role with no guaranteed hours
Pay £17.00 per hour
