About BEVA
The British Equine Veterinary Association is the professional membership body for equine veterinary surgeons in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1961, BEVA exists to advance equine veterinary science, represent the interests of its members, and promote the highest standards of equine health and welfare.
With approximately 4,500 members spanning clinical practice, academia, policy, and industry BEVA occupies a central position in the equine sector, both domestically and internationally. Its activities include a world-leading annual Congress, two peer-reviewed journals (Equine Veterinary Journal and Equine Veterinary Education), a substantial continuing professional development programme, and active engagement with government, regulators and equine industry bodies.
BEVA is constituted as a not-for-profit (NFP) company limited by guarantee. It is governed by a Board of Management (BoM) comprising elected officers and directors drawn from the membership, supported by a small executive staff team.
The role
The Honorary Treasurer is a full member of BEVA's Board of Management and carries specific responsibility for the financial stewardship and governance oversight of the Association (Group turnover circa £2.5M). The role is not an executive finance function (BEVA employs a professional finance team for day-to-day operations), but rather a critical board-level voice that ensures financial information is properly understood, scrutinised and acted upon.
The Treasurer works closely with the Chief Executive and the Association’s Finance Manager. They are the primary board point of contact with the external auditors and are expected to bring both financial literacy and sound governance judgement to that relationship.
As a charity, BEVA’s board members carry specific legal responsibilities under charity law. The Treasurer plays a particular role in supporting the Board’s collective understanding of those obligations — including duties to the Charity Commission, the requirement to demonstrate public benefit, and the governance standards expected of a registered charity. Candidates should be comfortable with those responsibilities and able to engage with them practically, not simply in the abstract.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
Key responsibilities:
- Review and scrutinise management accounts, budgets, and financial forecasts; ensure the Board understands the financial position at each meeting
- Oversee the annual audit process; act as the primary board-level liaison with external auditors; present the audited accounts to the Board for approval
- Ensure BEVA’s reserves policy and investment policy are appropriate, regularly reviewed, and understood by the Board; lead the Board’s thinking on investment strategy, including the deployment and management of the Association’s longer-term funds
- Advise the Board on the financial implications of strategic decisions, including investment, risk, and expenditure commitments
- Ensure compliance with BEVA’s charity governance obligations, including financial reporting requirements under Charity SORP, accountability to the Charity Commission, and the duty to demonstrate public benefit; act as a key, board-level point of accountability for BEVA’s compliance with charity law and the standards expected of a registered charity
- Lead the Board’s approach to financial and governance risk management; ensure BEVA’s risk register adequately captures financial and compliance risks, that mitigations are appropriate, and that the Board is sighted on material risk at each meeting
- Support the Chief Executive and finance staff in the development of a financially sustainable operating model
- Contribute as an active, engaged board member to the wider governance and strategic direction of BEVA
Person specification
We are looking for someone who combines genuine financial and governance competence with an understanding of the equine veterinary world. These qualities are all important. A candidate with deep financial expertise but no feel for BEVA's membership and mission will struggle to contribute effectively to the Board. Equally, sector credibility without the ability to read, challenge and contextualise financial information would not serve the role.
Essential
- Ability to read, interpret and constructively challenge NFP accounts, management information and audit reports
- Understanding of NFP governance frameworks — including trustee/director responsibilities, reserves policy, restricted and unrestricted funds, and the principles of Charity SORP
- Sound board-level judgement: the confidence to raise concerns clearly and proportionately without causing unnecessary alarm, and the discernment to distinguish between structural issues and presentational or timing matters
- Credibility and confidence in a boardroom setting; ability to engage with professional advisers (auditors, lawyers, bankers) on equal terms
- Commitment to BEVA's mission and values, and an understanding of the equine veterinary or broader equine sector
