Horticultural Apprentice

Key Duties and Responsibilities

They will work as part of the horticultural team, developing practical skills and knowledge while supporting the maintenance and enhancement of gardens, landscapes, and green spaces.

The Apprentice Will

  • Assist with the planting and maintenance of trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plants.
  • Support routine grounds maintenance activities, including weeding, watering, mulching, and lawn care.
  • Help prepare planting beds, landscaped areas, and sites for new planting projects.
  • Assist with pruning and maintenance activities under supervision.
  • Learn how to identify common plants, trees, weeds, pests, and diseases.
  • Use horticultural tools and equipment safely and correctly following appropriate training.
  • Assist with seasonal horticultural tasks throughout the year.
  • Help maintain clean, safe, and tidy working areas.
  • Support environmental improvement and biodiversity projects where required.
  • Follow health and safety procedures and safe working practices at all times.
  • Work effectively as part of a team and communicate positively with colleagues and customers.
  • Assist with the care and maintenance of tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Attend apprenticeship training sessions and complete all required coursework and assessments.

Develop Practical Horticultural Skills Through On-the-job Training And Experience

  • No experience required;
  • Professional and presentable demeanour with positive client liaison skills;
  • A belief in our mission, vision and values;
  • Have a passion for nature and the environment;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills;
  • A love of working outdoors in all weather; and Good IT skills;
  • The ability to use initiative;
  • Problem solving skills;
  • A good level of physical fitness;
  • Stamina for holding equipment, such as a hand tools the ability to lift heavy objects and remain on your feet for long periods of time;
  • The ability to develop working relationships;
  • A keenness for teamwork;
  • A willingness to learn identification skills for a range of trees, plants, butterflies, birds and wildflowers;
  • A willingness to work to health and safety guidelines;
  • Have a desire to be a specialist in your area of work
