We’re looking for a helpful, organised person to support daily café operations. You’ll learn to open the café, gain barista skills, serve customers, prepare food, waitress, wash dishes and keep tables clear. It’s a great first step into a hospitality career in a supportive, welcoming environment.
What you'll do at work
- Support café operations by preparing food and beverages
- Provide excellent customer service
- Ensure all food and drink are made to specification, with awareness of allergens and cross-contamination
- Maintain cleanliness across the café, including tables, counters and equipment
- Restock ingredients, drinks and supplies throughout the day
- Follow food hygiene and safety procedures at all times
- Work as part of a team to keep service running smoothly
- Assist with opening and closing duties
- Handle payments accurately at the till
- Communicate clearly with customers and colleagues to create a welcoming atmosphere
Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

- Identify opportunities and apply techniques to increase sales and improve customer experience.
- Tailors communication techniques to meet customer needs and build rapport.
- Maintain a safe, hygienic, and secure working environment.
- Comply with health and safety legislation, regulations, guidelines and procedures.
- Follow food safety and allergen legislation and procedures applicable to own role.
- Use technology and equipment in line with business policy to meet customer needs.
- Handle transactions and payments securely.
- Work as part of a team to ensure that the products and services are delivered on time and in line with business needs
- Deal with or escalate issues that impact service and customer experience, and implement any instructions given by supervisor.
- Use professional methods of communication that are tailored to different situations, and individual and team needs.
- Manages own time and workload, prioritising tasks.
- Maintain and rotate stock according to life cycle and business processes.
- Ensure equipment and technology faults and maintenance issues are reported promptly.
- Check customers are satisfied with products and services through questioning and act on feedback in line with business procedures.
- Keep up to date with changes to products and processes.
- Uses feedback to improve own performance.
- Reduces the waste of resources, taking sustainability into account, in line with business expectations.
- Follows and supports equity, diversity and inclusion legislation and principles.
- Participate in team briefings, implementing instructions, and offering input or feedback where relevant.

Training will take place hands-on in the workplace, where you will learn all café duties through practical experience. You will be supported throughout your apprenticeship by a dedicated tutor, who will provide regular guidance, reviews and additional learning to help you develop the skills and knowledge required for the role.
Desirable qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade Grade 4 or above)
- Maths (grade Grade 4 or above)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
The ideal person for this role
The ideal person for this role will be kind, motivated and eager to learn, with a genuine interest in food and coffee. They should have good communication skills, be hard-working and self-motivated, and enjoy being part of a team. We’re looking for someone who is keen to progress within hospitality, can follow instructions, maintain high standards and contribute positively to our friendly café environment.
The Test of Stockbridge is a café on the bank of the River Test in the heart of Stockbridge serving local food and excellent coffee in a beautiful location.
