About the Role

As our apprentice, you’ll start by learning essential hospitality and front of house customer service skills. We’ll guide you through a comprehensive training scheme, allowing you to learn front of house and management skills, so you can progress and one day manage and run your own pub.

Wage

  • £13,312 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age
  • National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices
  • Minimum wage rates (opens in new tab)
  • Your wage will be reviewed regularly as you learn and develop, and you’ll have the opportunity for overtime hours, which will be paid at National Minimum Wage.

Hours

  • You’ll work on a rota system that will give you the opportunity to work on different days, and different shifts. This will allow you to gain a wide range of experience.
  • 32 hours a week

What You'll Do at Work

We offer a comprehensive training programme designed to give you the skills and confidence to build your career in hospitality. From learning the essentials of great service through to developing management expertise, our training opens the door to real progression, with the chance to run your own pub.

As our new apprentice, you’ll be the backbone of our professional team, learning valuable front of house, hospitality and customer service skills.

Duties Will Include:

  • Greeting guests, taking orders, and serving food and drink with a friendly, professional approach
  • Learning to work behind the bar (for those aged 18+), including pouring drinks and caring for cask ales
  • Becoming familiar with the menu and daily specials to confidently assist with guest queries
  • Upselling menu items and making recommendations to enhance the customer experience
  • Keeping service areas clean, tidy, and well-stocked throughout the shift
  • Following all food safety and allergen procedures during preparation and service
  • Handling payments accurately and in line with company procedures
  • Working closely with colleagues to keep service running smoothly
  • Responding to customer feedback
  • Taking part in training and development activities to build your skills and help further your career
  • Maintaining high standards of personal appearance, punctuality, and conduct
  • All other associated duties as required

What You'll Learn

Course Contents

  • Serve food and beverages to individual business standards.
  • Identify opportunities and apply techniques to increase sales and improve customer experience.
  • Tailors communication techniques to meet customer needs and build rapport.
  • Maintain a safe, hygienic, and secure working environment.
  • Comply with health and safety legislation, regulations, guidelines and procedures.
  • Follow food safety and allergen legislation and procedures applicable to own role.
  • Use technology and equipment in line with business policy to meet customer needs.
  • Handle transactions and payments securely.
  • Work as part of a team to ensure that the products and services are delivered on time and in line with business needs
  • Deal with or escalate issues that impact service and customer experience, and implement any instructions given by supervisor.
  • Use professional methods of communication that are tailored to different situations, and individual and team needs.
  • Manages own time and workload, prioritising tasks.
  • Maintain and rotate stock according to life cycle and business processes.
  • Ensure equipment and technology faults and maintenance issues are reported promptly.
  • Check customers are satisfied with products and services through questioning and act on feedback in line with business procedures.
  • Keep up to date with changes to products and processes.
  • Uses feedback to improve own performance.
  • Reduces the waste of resources, taking sustainability into account, in line with business expectations.
  • Follows and supports equity, diversity and inclusion legislation and principles.
  • Participate in team briefings, implementing instructions, and offering input or feedback where relevant.

Training Schedule

  • Food Beverage Team Member Level 2.
  • All delivery for this apprenticeship will take place within your place of work at The Horse and Jockey in Waddington. A dedicated Vocational Trainer will visit on average once every 4 weeks, to establish a personal learning and development plan, outlining a schedule of training activities and business objectives.
  • You will complete a mixture of on and off the job training, including a comprehensive programme of internal development that will equip you with all the skills required to move into a management role, and one day run your own pub.
  • You will have a review every 8-12 weeks with your Line Manager and Trainer to discuss your progress.

  • You’ll have time allocated away from your usual duties for training and development.
  • We have our own internal training portal that will compliment the learning you complete on your apprenticeship.

  • GCSE in:
    • English (grade 3/D or above)
    • Maths (grade 3/D or above)
  • Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

  • The Horse and Jockey is located on the High Street in Waddington, near Lincoln. Please check the location and ensure you would be able to travel to work on a daily basis.
