Malvern College is looking for a House Assistant to join one of its boarding houses. The role mixes pastoral care, housekeeping and administration, and you'll work as part of a close house team supporting around 60 pupils aged 13 to 18.
About Malvern College
Malvern College is a leading independent co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 13 to 18, with a 158-year history. Many pupils join from its affiliated prep school, The Downs Malvern, which educates 200 children aged 3 to 13. The two campuses sit on the slopes of the Malvern Hills in 250 acres of grounds. The Malvern family also includes sister schools in Qingdao, Chengdu, New Cairo, Hong Kong and Tokyo, and more than 4,200 pupils are educated across the group worldwide.
The role
Each boarding house is home to about 60 pupils. The house team is made up of the Housemaster or Housemistress (HSM), a Deputy HSM and the House Assistants. As a House Assistant you'll be a visible, approachable presence for pupils. You'll give day-to-day care and know when a pupil needs more specialist support. The role isn't a disciplinary one, but you'll help maintain standards in the house.
You'll also keep the house running smoothly behind the scenes. You'll handle much of the pupils' daily administration and work closely with Catering, the Domestic Bursary and Estates. From time to time you'll drive pupils to medical and other appointments, both routine and emergency.
What you'll be doing
- Providing day-to-day pastoral care for pupils
- Monitoring pupils' health, working with the Medical Centre and caring for any pupil confined to the house
- Handling admin such as pupil registration, room plans, whereabouts forms, Tier 4 whereabouts and travel arrangements for Leave Outs, half terms and holidays
- Following up pupil absences and managing the boarding house inbox
- Giving the daily handover to colleagues
- Making sure mealtimes run smoothly, that pupils are eating well, and raising any issues with Catering
- Supervising pupils so that studies, dormitories and common rooms are kept tidy
- Supervising the cleaning and laundry staff each day and working with the Domestic Bursar
- Overseeing pupils' clothing and laundry and helping with domestic tasks
- Reporting maintenance issues to Estates through the school's system
- Setting a good example of courtesy and conduct for pupils
- Helping the HSM prepare for and host house events, such as Commemoration, the Ball and visits from prospective parents
- Closing and opening the house at the end and start of Leave Outs, half terms and terms

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
